Droga Koleżanko Czesławo,
Pogrążona w smutku Rodzino Kolegi Stanisława Maksymiliana Smoleńskiego,
Z wielkim żalem i smutkiem przyjąłem wiadomość o śmierci Kolegi Stanisława, weterana i naszego zasłużonego członka. Jest to ogromna strata nie tylko dla Stowarzyszenia Polskich Kombatantów (SPK) Koła nr 13 w Winnipegu, ale także dla Federacji Światowej SPK.
Kolega Stanisław urodził się 14 grudnia 1919 roku w Warszawie. Wychował się w rodzinie patriotycznej. Tuż przed wybuchem II wojny światowej ukończył szkołę wyższą. W marcu 1940 roku został deportowany wraz z rodziną do Kazachstanu. Po amnestii, dotarł do tworzącej się w ZSRS Armii Polskiej. W marcu 1942 roku przeszedł ze Związku Sowieckiego do Iranu z Armią gen. Andersa i 17 lipca 1942 roku został wcielony do 2 Korpusu Polskiego. W grudniu 1943 roku, po przeszkoleniu w Iraku, Palestynie, Libii i Egipcie, przetransportowany do Taranto we Włoszech. Jako czołgista 6 Pułku Pancernego „Dzieci Lwowskich”, 2 Warszawskiej Brygady Pancernej, przeszedł cały szlak bojowy 2 Korpusu. Dowodził czołgiem podczas Bitwy o Monte Cassino.
Kolega Stanisław, podporucznik Wojska Polskiego w stanie spoczynku, był odznaczony m.in. Medalem Wojska za Wojnę 1939-45, Krzyżem Pamiątkowym Monte Cassino, Krzyżem Czynu Bojowego Polskich Sił Zbrojnych na Zachodzie, Krzyżem Zesłańców Sybiru i Medalem Wojska Polskiego oraz odznaczeniami brytyjskimi: 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, War Medal 1939-1945 i Defence Medal. Ponadto za zasługi dla SPK, Srebrną Odznaką Honorową Federacji Światowej SPK oraz Złotym, Srebrnym i Brązowym Krzyżem Kombatanckim SPK w Kanadzie.
Zdemobilizowany 27 listopada 1948 roku, zamieszkał w Anglii. Po 10 latach wyemigrował do Kanady i osiedlił się w Winnipeg. Tam poznał i poślubił ukochaną Czesię, z którą przeżył 60 lat. Po przyjeździe do Winnipeg włączył się w życie polonijne, wstępując w 1976 roku do SPK Koła nr 13. Piastował szereg funkcji w Zarządzie Koła, będąc przez wiele lat Sekretarzem.
Kolega Stanisław był bez reszty oddany pracy dla dobra SPK i Niepodległej Polski. Z Jego odejściem Polonia straciła wybitnego społecznika, dżentelmena i patriotę, z którego będziemy zawsze brali przykład.
Mile wspominam nasze spotkania na uroczystościach i obchodach rocznicowych w Domu SPK w Winnipeg oraz w „Klubie 13”. W 2019 roku z okazji przekazania do Polski samolotu „Dakota” gen. Kazimierza Sosnkowskiego, miałem zaszczyt wręczyć Koledze Stanisławowi „Dyplom Uznania", nadany za zasługi dla naszego Stowarzyszenia. Ponadto z okazji setnej rocznicy urodzin, Kolega Stanisław został odznaczony Złotym Krzyżem Kombatanckim SPK w Kanadzie za wybitną, wieloletnią pracę przy realizacji celów Stowarzyszenia oraz za pracę na rzecz Kanady, Polski i Polonii.
Zawsze uważałem Kolegę Stanisława za przykład żywej historii, stale przypominającej o tragicznych losach Polaków, ale także za przykład tego wszystkiego, co łączy nasze Stowarzyszenie.
Odchodząc na „wieczna wartę” pozostawił w smutku Rodzinę i przyjaciół, z którymi łączymy się w żalu.
Żałuję, że ze względu na panującą pandemię nie mogę osobiście pożegnać Kolegi Stanisława, ale proszę mi wierzyć, że sercem jestem z Wami.
W imieniu własnym, Zarządu Głównego i Rady Naczelnej oraz wszystkich członków SPK w Kanadzie, przekazuję wyrazy najgłębszego współczucia Rodzinie i najbliższym.

Our sincere condolences to Mrs. Smolenski, daughter Margaret (Jacek), sons Jo and Les, grandson Greg.
I had the privilege of meeting Stan. Smolenski on a few occasions and was honoured when I first met him when his daughter Margaret brought him to visit our gallery.
I again, was honoured to be asked to attend the celebrations of his 99th and 100th birthdays.
Margaret & her husband Jacek shared wonderful stories and I have always had great admiration for this wonderful gentleman. Margaret would tell me - and show photos - of her time with her wonderful father, proudly and with a lot of love in her voice and a smile on her face.
Mr. Smolenski and his wife raised wonderful, kind, compassionate, sensitive and creative loving children and this was so very evident on those occasions I saw them and how they interacted.
We send our love and prayers to the family and are proud to know them. Rest in peace Stanislaw Smolenski, and know you touched a lot of peoples' hearts.
“May we take comfort in knowing there is one more angel above us.” We are thinking of you during these difficult times and our thoughts and prayers are with you.
