Appointment of Godparents is a common practice in the Ukrainian community. Some take it more seriously than others. Rose was my Godmother and she took it very seriously. Her family and my mother’s ( Parnick ) were close. Rose was bridesmaid at my parents’ wedding in 1939. I was born in 1941, and baptized at St. Michaels Church on Disraeli. Thanks to Rose I’ve been able to maintain roots in Winnipeg even though I grew up in Kamsack, Saskatchewan and spent only a year of high school and three years of university in Winnipeg. Her primary role in this regard, encouraged me to maintain connections with the Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba, and to be active in the Frontier Centre for Public for Public Policy, a think tank based in Winnipeg. I took her advice when she cautioned me to stay out of politics, per se. Thanks to her family I know my roots there will remain well-watered. Sorry I couldn’t attend this event. Russell Kalmacoff
