Obituary of DOREEN ROMANOW

DOREEN ROMANOW (HANSEN)
April 29, 1934 – December 29, 2024

Peacefully, on Sunday, December 29, 2024, Doreen passed away at Bethania Personal Care home at the age of 90.

Doreen leaves to mourn her children Richard (Sharon), Carol Mazur (Bernie), grandchildren Sarah and Randall Romanow (Kate), Scott Mazur, great-grandchildren Leo and Luna Romanow, her brother Donald Halling of Ottawa, many nieces and nephews, and her cherished life-long friend Betty Chester.

Doreen was predeceased by her husband Boris in 1997 (after 43 years of marriage), parents Gudrun Halling and Holger Hansen, brother Gerald, and infant sister Norma.

Doreen was born in Winnipeg and married Boris on September 25, 1954. They bought a new house in Transcona in 1957, where she lived for 63 years until June 2020.

Doreen had a passion for teaching and when the Museum of Man and Nature (now known as the Manitoba Museum) put out a call for school program volunteers in 1970, she answered the call.

She officially began her volunteer duties in January 1971, and for the next 50 years she would go on to develop and deliver educational programs to over 60,000 school children.

In April 2010, Doreen was presented with the Province of Manitoba Lieutenant Governor’s Make a Difference Award, in recognition of her first 40 years of volunteering. The award is in recognition of significant contribution to the community through volunteer service, and was a highlight of her 50 years of volunteering at the Museum.

Doreen’s first full time job was at Eaton’s. Then in 1963, in addition to volunteering, Doreen began working alongside her husband Boris at Avenue Jewellers, which she and Boris owned and operated for 35 years.

In 1981, Doreen took her most memorable trip to visit her Dad and extended family in Norway and Denmark. The wonderful memories from that trip lasted a lifetime as she stayed connected with her relatives.

Doreen loved to be in the company of others and she enjoyed the wonderful courtyard at Bethania, volunteers, the staff and residents she encountered every day.

We would like to thank the staff and volunteers at Bethania for taking such good care of our Mom and Grandma.

A celebration of life service will be held on Monday, January 6, 2025 at 10:00 am at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1800 Day Street.
