ANTONIO (TONY) MANUEL PEREIRA DE OLIVEIRA

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Antonio (tony) Manuel Pereira de Oliveira. Tony passed peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones on November 23, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Antonio was born on May 7th, 1951, to Maria Olinda Pereira Rosa and Joaquim maria de Oliveira in Figueira da Foz Portugal. At 14 years old he began working in the shipyards as a welder, around the same time he played soccer at naval for 2 years. At the age of 18 Tony volunteered to join the green berets (special  forces) as a paratrooper in the town of Tancos Entroncamento. From 1969-1971 he fought in the Mozambique civil war. Shortly after he returned to Portugal to marry the love of his life Sao Maia.

In 1975 the two of them immigrated to Canada to start a family. They had two children, Alexandre (Tania) and Lucia (Adam). Antonio is survived by his 4 grandchildren, Adriano Cintrao, Helio Cintrao, Mia Oliveira and Gabriella Oliveira. In Portugal by his two sisters Julia Branco (Alvarito Silva) Quina Marques (Jose Nogueira). His two brothers Jose Silva and Jose Antonio Pereira. Nieces and nephews, Sonia (Marco) Tomas Pedro, Joana, Pedro (Diana), Luis (Sonia). Sister-in-law Estrela Maligno. Nieces and nephews, Tony (Debbie), Carlos (Ana), Miguel, Andre and Nancy.

Tony started his life in Canada building homes and working for versatile. Eventually in 1978 he would begin a long career at Winnipeg supply/building products where he worked until the age of 63 as a welder and repair shop supervisor. Antonio loved going back to Portugal to visit family and friends. He had great passion for soccer, watching his favourite team Benfica. He also enjoyed Winnipeg sports, the Blue Bombers and Jets. He is well known for his volunteer work in the Portuguese community. Tony loved to help any way he could. Volunteering every night at Portuguese school for years. Heavily involved in Casa do Minho and the Portuguese Association, helping with Folklorama at both centers and even bingo night at the Association.  

The family would like to thank cancer care for their kindness. Special thanks to Dr. Dayyat and Dr. Fainstein for their help. A special thanks to the WRHA palliative care and nurse Angela for being amazing.

Funeral Liturgy will be held on Friday, November 29, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 181 Austin St. N with condolences to the family starting at 11:00 a.m.
