PATRICIA ZAPISOCKI

Obituary of PATRICIA MARTHA ZAPISOCKI

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Patricia Zapisocki on November 1, 2024 at Concordia Hospital.

Pat is survived by her children Cheryl, Karen (Delma) and Andrew, sisters Marion Kirkland and Martha Brown, sisters-in-law Irene Zapisocki and Mary McIntosh, furry granddaughters Sadie and Georgie, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Pat was predeceased by her husband Walter, parents Lena Komarnicki and Peter Komarnicki, in-laws William and Martha Zapisocki, sister Helen Sywy, brother Peter Komarnicki and brothers-in-law Malcolm Kirkland, Peter Sywy and Robert Brown.

Pat grew up on Eaton Street in Elmwood. Eaton Street provided her with a strong sense of belonging as it was also home to several relatives and neighbors who were like family. She had very strong memories of growing up on Eaton Street, especially times spent with her cousin Don.

Pat was eager to leave school and begin working at age 16. Her first job was at the Canadian Wheat Board alongside her sisters Marion and Helen. She worked there for many years until she left to raise her family. She eventually returned to the workforce, working for a few federal government departments until her retirement.

Pat set her sights on Elmwood Giants baseball player Wally Zapisocki and after dating for several years, they were married on July 16, 1960. They were together until Wally’s passing in January 2019.

During their years together they travelled all over Canada and the United States. As Wally was a sports fan, they also spent much time at sporting events including regularly attending Bombers and Goldeyes games. Pat’s interest in sports continued after Wally’s passing as she became a faithful fan of the Jets and an avid tennis and curling spectator.

Pat was a huge Neil Diamond fan. She attended every concert when he performed in Winnipeg and also travelled to Minneapolis, Saskatoon and Vancouver to see him perform.

Pats other hobbies included baking and knitting. She had a passion for making dough which became the base for her delicious pies and butter tarts. It gave her great pleasure to share her creations with others.

In the last few years Pat attended the Adult Day Program at Holy Family Home. She derived great pleasure from all the activities, but especially enjoyed the special themed days which required her to dress up. She easily developed connection with the people and these relationships had a profound effect on her. She also appreciated opportunities to visit with her cousin Marion.

Through the years we spent much time together as a family and mom was always a central figure in our gatherings. While her passing leaves a huge void in our family, we are dearly grateful for all the time that we spent together.

We would like to thank the nurses and health care aides on N3 East at Concordia Hospital for the kind and thoughtful care given to our mother.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. Private Interment will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to Holy Family Home, 165 Aberdeen Ave, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R2W 1T9.
