JOSE VIEIRA

Obituary of JOSE DOS SANTOS VIEIRA

It is with great sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Jose dos Santos Vieira at the age of 94 on Saturday, October 12, 2024, surrounded by his loving family in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Jose was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, who will be lovingly remembered by his children:  Jose (Fatima), John (Analia), Jerry (Gina), Arthur (Tina), Maria Manuela (Manuel), 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.  Jose was predeceased by his loving wife of 69 years, Arminda.  He will be dearly missed by many family members and friends in Winnipeg and Europe.

Jose was born and raised in Covão do Coelho, Portugal, was married in August of 1954, and in 1970, together with their five children, decided to immigrate to Canada, first residing in Thompson and then finally in Winnipeg.  To provide for his family, he worked in the construction industry framing homes and apartment buildings.  He enjoyed hunting with his friends, making homemade wine, and watching hockey and Portuguese soccer games.  He loved to play the harmonica, and an intense game of Sueca (card game).  In 1985 he moved back to Portugal to enjoy retirement in his homeland.  He travelled back and forth between Covão do Coelho and Winnipeg to visit family for several years.  In 2015, he returned to Winnipeg permanently, and it was during this time he was able to spend precious moments with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  His face would light up when they would give him a hug or kiss.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Health Sciences Centre, at Videl Clinic, Videl Pharmacy, the pacemaker clinic, and most recently the home care workers who visited daily.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, October 18, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. with viewing beginning at 11:00 a.m. both at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 181 Austin Street North.  Interment to follow in Assumption Cemetery, 3990 Portage Avenue.
