We remember meeting Spencer, Irene, & young Josef during the early days of Grain of Wheat's mixing & fermentation. His leadership was invaluable during that time of kneading & proofing. Spencer's godly insight was helpful in the baking & cooling process. In 1982, during GOW's Covenant Weekend, Spencer along with our other Servant Leaders could slice & package our daily bread. Rest in peace Spencer. You have left us a lasting legacy.

Spencer was one of the 3 Wise Men (and was the last surviving) who led the Grain of Wheat Church-Community in its early years when we joined having returned from eight years in South Asia. He was also my neighbour with whom I shared a deep respect for his graduate supervisor, George (Lament for a Nation) Grant. In the stormy days leading up to the free trade agreement with the United States, Spencer provided strong encouragement to speak out for a healthy Canadian nationalism. I always valued his penetrating insights and I am grateful for having known him.

To Spencer's family: I have many fond childhood memories of visiting Aunt Jean and Uncle Lloyd in Peterborough with my parents, Elsie (Estabrooks, Lloyd's sister) and Max Chambers. There was a piano in the family room and lots of sheet music! Aunt Jean and Uncle Lloyd were extremely proud of all their children. Judi Chambers, Southampton, Ontario

I have many good memories of Spencer. I first met him at Reba Place in Chicago when several of us met to begin planning for the creation of a church community in Winnipeg-Grain of Wheat. He was one of our first three Servant Leaders. Spencer was a very spiritual person who helped to keep us on a spiritual path. I remember a presentation he gave at Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute (where I was teaching) on the challenges that technology was creating for our society. My thoughts and prayers are with all of the family members who will him a lot.
Lloyd Penner.
