Obituary of MILKA (MILLIE) PAULIC
We announce with great sorrow and profound sadness the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Milka (Millie) Paulić on Monday, September 2, 2024 with her family by her side.
She is predeceased by her husband Ivica, mother Mare and infant son Frank.
Left to cherish her memory are her children Marija, Franjo (Tricia) and Jelena (Marijan), grandchildren Antony (Ola), Nikola, Adriana, Madeline, Owen, Ben and great grandchildren Ilija and Jakov. Also, her brother Mišo (Eleanor), sister-in-law Janjo (Vinko) and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Milka was born on January 27, 1941 in Batnoga, Cetingrad, Croatia. She lived on a small parcel of land with her mother and brother. She met Ivica as a young woman. Although they lived in neighbouring villages, Ivica often made the long journey to Batnoga from Strmačka to visit his sweetheart. They were married in the early 1960s. Shortly after, they immigrated to Canada and settled in Winnipeg in 1965. Years later when her mother and brother immigrated to Winnipeg her family was complete. She loved being part of the growing Croatian community and was very proud of her Croatian heritage. She truly enjoyed all the conveniences of life living in a big city, being close to family and friends and even simple things like buying fresh bread from the store.
Milka had a generous heart and was a hard worker all her life. She worked hard to make sure her family did not go without. Life was not easy for her but she always did the best she could. She started her new life in Winnipeg sewing clothing and shoes. Years later she became employed at the Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature where she worked for many years on the night shift, which having a young family at the time was very challenging. She was fortunate to work with many Croatian ladies there which made life easier. After many years, she was transferred to the Centennial Concert Hall and remained at this position until her retirement in 2006.
Milka loved spending time with family, friends and was a very devoted daughter who cared deeply for her mother. She enjoyed car rides and exploring Manitoba, then later spending weekends at the cottage. She loved to cook and made all the traditional Croatian dishes, which her family enjoyed. She took pleasure in sewing things for the household, decorating her home and tending to her garden. She also enjoyed crocheting intricate doilies and knitting slippers, scarves, and hats for her family. It was not uncommon to hear needles clicking all day and long into the night.
Milka’s faith was extremely important to her and when she was no longer able to attend mass, she still always prayed the Rosary many times during the day. Later on in life, when things got difficult for her, she enjoyed the simpler things such as sitting on the front step soaking in the sunshine, admiring her morning glories and daisies in the flower beds and watching people pass by.
Now you can rest easy Mama, in comfort, with your loved ones. We’ll miss you.
Počivaj u miru Mama. Volimo Te
