Obituary of MARIA SMOLENSKI

MARIA SMOLENSKI It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Maria Smolenski (née Siekacz) on April 13, 2013. Maria was predeceased by her parents and dearest brothers WÅ‚adek and Kostek. Maria is survived by her husband of 53 years; Andrew, son Mark (Lee-Ann), grandchildren; Abigail, Emily, Iain, and numerous nephews and nieces in England. Maria was born in Bezwodne, Poland on May 30, 1926. Orphaned in 1942, Maria was transported to Palestine where she joined the School of Young Volunteers (SzkoÅ‚a MÅ‚odych Ochotniczek (S.M.O)) and completed her secondary education Maria settled in London, England where she studied Nursing. She graduated in 1952 and practiced as a Registered Nurse and Mid-wife. In 1956 Maria emigrated to Canada to join the City of Winnipeg Health Department where she practiced as a Registered Public Health Nurse for 32 years. Maria was an active member of the Polish Combatants Association (S.P.K) where she enjoyed volunteering for Folklorama. She most enjoyed spending her summers in the Whiteshell with family and friends but her greatest joy were her grandchildren. A Prayer Service will be held on Thursday, April 18 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 19, at 10:00 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery, 88 Hespeler Avenue. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to your favorite charity. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the SOGH 5th floor U1 and U5 medical teams for the comfort and care provided.
