PETER HREHORUK

Obituary of PETER HREHORUK

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of our husband, father, and grandfather Peter Hrehoruk in Winnipeg at the age of 91 on July 20, 2024.

He was predeceased by parents Steve and Mary (Monasterski) Hrehoruk, son Darrell, sisters Ann and Olga (Edward Page), brother William (Doreen), brother-in-law Myron Shack and nephews David Hrehoruk, Richard Winnicky, and Dennis Kulbaba.

Peter is survived by his wife Katherine of 64 years, daughter Linda (Rick Ropchan), son Stuart, granddaughters Tiana Ropchan and Morgan Madeiros, and sister Elsie (Shack) along with many nieces and nephews.

Born in the area of Malonton, Manitoba on July 9, 1933 he grew up on the family farm until he moved to the city of Winnipeg in the early 1950s.  Peter casually played the guitar and accordion for the entertainment of family and friends.

Peter worked a variety of jobs, but the longest were in the food industry at A&P, Booth Fisheries, and lastly Weidman Foods where he retired in 1997.

He married Katherine (Rozak) in 1960 and the two raised three children, first in Winnipeg and then in St. Andrews, Manitoba.  They were active members of St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church for decades, helping at bingos, banquets, and other church activities.  Peter and Katherine always had a beautiful garden which provided so many good meals and snacks for their family.  They enjoyed travelling to see family across Canada and Bermuda, and vacations to Ukraine and the United States.

Playing cards, board games, and jigsaw puzzles provided much entertainment and joy to the family for many years.  “Gigi” was known to be a jokester to his two loving grandchildren.  Peter was outgoing, friendly, and kind to all.  His calm personality fit well with his enjoyment of TV and sleeping.

Thank you to the staff at River East Personal Care Home and Concordia Village Assisted Living where he spent his last few years.  Katherine took care of her husband to his last day and was his strongest advocate.

As per Peter’s wishes a private graveside service was held at Holy Family Cemetery.

Donations can be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (www.michaeljfox.org) or St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church (for the benefit of Holy Family Cemetery) (www.stnicholaschurch.ca).
