Obituary of GILBERT JOHN BELANGER

GILBERT JOHN BELANGER
January 17, 1953 - January 24, 2024

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our husband, father, and Papa, Gilbert Belanger on January 24, 2024.

Gilbert was predeceased by his parents Noel and Alice Belanger. Gilbert leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Beverly Belanger (nee McDougall), daughter Nicole and her husband Jim, son Luke and his wife Trina, and his three beloved grand-children: Sam, Ellie, and Heidi. Left to mourn Gilbert are his siblings Dennis (Mary), Gerry (Lyn), Noel (Jeannine), Noella, and Eileen. Gilbert had 20 nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.

Gilbert was born in the winter of 1953 in Selkirk, MB. He was the fifth of six children. Gilbert was an adorable kid whose eyes lit up when he smiled. He loved being outside and especially loved being at the lake. The family cabin at Otter Falls was dear to Gilbert's heart.

Gilbert married Beverly on May 6, 1978. He worked hard to provide for his young family. He earned his journeyman ticket from Red River and worked as a painter the rest of his career. He started with his brother Dennis's business, Bel-Artistic. He also worked many term positions at Riverview Health Centre, and was thrilled when he was hired for a permanent position. His years at Riverview were full of good friendships and lunch time crib games. He truly loved his time there. Gilbert was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Selkirk Branch (#42) since 1975.

Gilbert had many hobbies, including fishing, curling, wood working, wood burning, listening to music, specifically blues, and cheering on his favourite teams, including the Jets, Bombers, and Blue Jays.

During his retirement years he continued participating in his hobbies, but his greatest joy came from being a proud grandfather. He took his role as Papa very seriously and regularly helped to take care of his grand kids, cheer them on at sporting events, and spoil them with treats.

Gilbert's family would like to thank the staff at HSC for the wonderful care he received. This is especially noted for his nurses and aids.

Gilbert will be dearly missed by family, friends, and colleagues. A celebration of life will be held in the summer. Donations in Gilbert's honour can be sent to a charity of choice.
