Obituary of CATHERINE ALLISON VOLKART

Catherine Allison Volkart

1957 - 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Catherine Allison Volkart on October 13, 2023. She passed away peacefully at the age of 66 and will always be remembered for her generosity, warmth and love.

Cathy was born on March 27, 1957 in Winnipeg, Manitoba and grew up in MacGregor, Manitoba, with her two brothers Gordon and James Lye. She kept busy playing many school sports, including basketball and volleyball, and figure skating. After graduating high school, Cathy moved to Winnipeg to attend Red River College. She graduated in 1976 with a degree in Secretarial Science and began her career at Great West Life as an Administrative Assistant. Cathy excelled at her work and formed great relationships with her coworkers. She made friends quickly in Winnipeg, including her husband, Bruce Volkart. Cathy met Bruce in the summer of 1977 and they were inseparable ever since.

Cathy married Bruce on September 26, 1981 and they built a home in Winnipeg where they raised two daughters, Ashlee and Alli. Cathy was a thoughtful, loving wife and mother, always putting her family first. She took a break from work to raise her girls when they were young and enjoyed volunteering her time in her community, whether it be teaching Sunday School at church or assisting with hot dog lunches at school. Cathy returned to the workforce later in life, capping off her career back at Great West Life.

Cathy loved sports, spending evenings watching the Winnipeg Jets, curling, or football. She also curled for many years with friends. She had an interest in fashion and shopping which led to many shopping trips to the States and, of course, she loved spending time with family and friends. Many memories were made on family camping trips and dinners with family and friends. Bruce and Cathy enjoyed several years of retirement together, including many trips to Mexico, before her dementia progressed.

Cathy was predeceased by her mother, Joyce and father, Glenn Lye. She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Bruce, children, Ashlee (Ryan) and Alli (Dustin), grandchildren, Oliver and Maebel, brothers Gord and Jamie, and sister-in-law Lisa Lye, brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws Doug and Jan Volkart, Gord and Lori Volkart, and Gail and Andy Bommersbach, and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would like to especially thank all of those who visited and sent well wishes. Thank you to Kildonan Personal Care Home for their great care during the past year and their support during the difficult last few months of Cathy’s life.

A memorial service will be held on October 23rd at 1pm at Cropo Funeral Chapel at 1442 Main Street, Winnipeg with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba at https://alzheimer.mb.ca.
