Obituary of GEORGINA ALICIA ROJAS

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, wife, grandmother, sister and friend, Alicia Rojas, at the Grace Hospital on September 9, 2023. Alicia was predeceased by her parents Gabriel and Georgina Ascencio. She leaves to mourn her husband of 50 years Mario, sons Mario Jr (Erin, Kyden, Jaidyn), Danny (Mechelle, Ethan, Lucas, Oliver, Niko) and siblings Gabriela, Gabriel, Carlos, Magaly, Luis Miguel and Cristina.

Alicia was born in Coyhaique, Chile. She was the oldest of 6 siblings. The family moved to Punta Arenas, Chile in 1961 and then to Santiago, Chile in 1967. As a teenager, she loved theatre and the Beatles. Alicia completed a Bachelor of Social Work Degree at the University of Chile during which time she met Mario. They married and had their first child Mario Jr. Alicia and Mario worked as Social Workers in Chile for 1 year until they were forced into exile due to the coup d’etat (1973). Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada welcomed the young family as political refugees in 1976. Danny was born shortly thereafter. Alicia was a loving, devoted mother. She completed the requirements required to have her Social Work Degree recognized in Canada and then worked as a Social Worker at Winnipeg Child and Family Services for 30 years until her retirement.

Alicia was an intelligent, strong, funny, loving, and caring person. She always worried about everyone else. Although there was significant physical distance between Chile and Canada; she was the confidant and counselor to her siblings. She enjoyed traveling, especially to Chile. Alicia enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grand children. She will always be remembered as the loving, caring matriarch of our family. Thank you so much for everything! You will be forever missed and always in our hearts! Rest in peace ‘Doonta/Papy’.

Con profunda tristeza anunciamos el fallecimiento de nuestra querida madre, esposa, abuela, hermana y amiga, Alicia Rojas, en el Hospital Grace el 9 de Septiembre de 2023. Alicia fue precedida por sus padres Gabriel y Georgina Ascencio. Se marcha y la llora su esposo de 50 años Mario, sus hijos Mario (Erin, Kyden, Jaidyn), Danny (Mechelle, Ethan, Lucas, Oliver, Niko) y sus hermanos Gabriela, Gabriel, Carlos, Magaly, Luis Miguel y Cristina.

Alicia nació en Coyhaique, Chile. Ella era la mayor de 6 hermanos. La familia se mudó a Punta Arenas, Chile en 1961 y luego a Santiago, Chile en 1967. Cuando era adolescente, amaba el teatro y los Beatles. Alicia completó la Licenciatura en Trabajo Social en la Universidad de Chile, tiempo en el que conoció a Mario. Se casaron y tuvieron su primer hijo Mario Jr. Alicia y Mario trabajaron como Trabajadores Sociales en Chile durante 1 año hasta que se vieron obligados a exiliarse por el golpe de Estado (1973). Winnipeg, Manitoba Canadá acogió a la joven familia como refugiados políticos en 1976. Danny nació poco después. Alicia era una madre amorosa y devota. Completó los requisitos necesarios para que su título en Trabajo Social fuera reconocido en Canadá y luego trabajó como Trabajadora Social en Child and Family Services durante 30 años hasta su jubilación.

Alicia era una persona inteligente, fuerte, divertida, cariñosa y solidaria. Ella siempre se preocupó por los demás. Si bien existía una importante distancia física entre Chile y Canadá, ella era la confidente y consejera de sus hermanos. Le gustaba viajar, especialmente a Chile. Alicia disfrutaba pasar tiempo con su familia, especialmente con todos sus nietos. Siempre será recordada como la matriarca cariñosa y afectuosa de nuestra familia. ¡Muchas gracias por todo! ¡Te extrañaremos por siempre y siempre estarás en nuestros corazones! Descanse en paz 'Doonta/Papy'
