Obituary of VERNA KAPKEY

VERNA KAPKEY

March 14, 1932 - August 24, 2023

It is with great sadness that our family announces the peaceful passing of Verna Kapkey at 91 years old with her family and Father Maximiuk by her side.

She will be dearly missed by her daughters Valerie (Ian), Lorraine (Art) and Diane (Wally), daughter-in-law Andrea, grandchildren Cory, Amber, Grace, Alex, Wiley and Keely, and great - grandchildren Alexis, Natalie, Brennan, Jade, Danika, Noah and Hannah.  Predeceased by her husband Bill in 1989, her son Randy in 2020 and her grandson Jesse in 2019, as well as her parents (Ksenka & Peter Jerama) and all her siblings (Steve, Joe, Sam, John, Ollie, Mike and Eileen).

Verna was born in Elphinstone, Manitoba to a large family. We will always remember the hilarious

stories told of her youth out on the farm.

Our family have such fond memories of our time in Gardenton at our summer home, making perogies and piroshky and, hosting all holiday dinners until recently, with her fabulous Ukrainian cooking.

Mom (baba) was the matriarch and heart of this large family. She was delightful, patient, understanding, non-judgmental, pleasant and had a great sense of humour. She was our rock and made everyone one of the family feel welcome and loved. She was the mentor of this family by teaching us how to lean on one another through the hard times and embrace the special moments.

She spent many hours at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral while faithfully attending church services and being a part of the sisterhood there. She gladly helped at every perogy pinching fundraiser and loved attending the seniors club.

Examples of her incredible hardworking spirit were raising a family while maintaining tenants, working within the home and tending to her garden. She also lived in Toronto, worked in a chocolate factory and was an Eaton’s catalogue agent. After her husband Bill was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, she was determined to create a support group in Manitoba and succeeded. Through this, she also beat cancer.

In her later years, she enjoyed line dancing with her partner Stan, travelling around the world (Hawaii, the Caribbean, Las Vegas etc) and going back to school. She taught the value of hard work and dedication, herself learning to drive in her 50's and taking numerous courses at Red River College to obtain her Business Administration diploma.

Mom (baba) will always be in our hearts and now she will be the angel watching over us.

Funeral service will be at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street on August 31, at 1:00 pm. Interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery.
