Obituary of MARIA MADALENA MEDEIROS BASIDIO FERREIRA

It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Maria Madalena Ferreira on August 6, 2023 at St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 80 years.

She was predeceased by her husband Luis do Couto Ferreira. Her parents Humberto and Maria de Jesus Basidio. In-laws, José da Costa Ferreira and Teresa Medeiros do Couto. Sisters-in-law, Teresa Ferreira, Conceicão (Jacinto) Correira and brother-in-law, José Luis Arruda.

Madalena leaves to mourn her daughters Fátima (Mario) Ferreira, Paula (Marco) Da Silva, Nélia (Ricardo) Moreira. Grandchildren, Kevin (Diana), Stephanie (Kenan), Alyshia, Jessica (Jordan), Joshua, Kianna, Briana and great-grandchildren Dominic, Vivian and Ella. Also, leaving to mourn are her family in São Miguel; sisters, Eduarda Basidio, Conceicão Arruda and Rosarinha (Manuel) Pacheco. Brother-in-law, José (Maria de Jesus) Ferreira. Family in Winnipeg; brother-in-law, Virgilio (Fernanda) Ferreira and sister-in-law, Gabriela (Manuel) Rego. As well as many nieces, nephews and godchildren in both São Miguel and Winnipeg.

She was born and raised in Ribeira Seca, Ribeira Grande – São Miguel, Açores. In 1974 she immigrated to Canada along with her love, Luis and two daughters Fátima and Paula. They settled in the West End area where years later their youngest daughter Nélia was born. Madalena worked as a seamstress for many years, retiring at the age of 65. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and traveling back to São Miguel.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the St. Boniface Research Foundation.

The family would like to thank the staff at St. Boniface Hospital. Special thanks to Nurse Barb for her care and compassion during mom’s last moments.

Prayers will be said on Thursday, August 10, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 181 Austin Street N.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, August 11, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. also at the church. Interment to follow in Assumption Cemetery, 3990 Portage Ave.
