Obituary of STELLA PTASHNYK

STELLA PTASHNYK

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Stella Ptashnyk on July 31, 2023 at Portage District General Hospital at the age of 99 years.

Stella leaves to cherish her memory her two daughters: Cathy (Tim) Keep of Portage la Prairie and Debbie (Clayton) Tychkowsky of Calgary, Alberta. As well, granddaughter Laura (Brant) Henderson, great-grandchildren Eathan and Avelyn of Strathmore, Alberta and granddaughter Amy Keep (Chris Cooze) great granddaughter Charlee of Nanaimo, BC. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Stella was predeceased by her husband Walter in 1999, parents Sydor and Barbara (nee Troschuk) Leochko; brothers Walter, Jerry and Peter; sisters Anne (Zasitko), Sophie (Tycholis), and Olga (Fuz).

Mom was born on February 25, 1924, in Chatfield, Manitoba and spent her childhood on the family farm in Poplarfield. In her early career she enjoyed working at Canada Packers and was proud to be promoted to foreman. Later, she worked at Eatons Mail Order, Air Canada tickets and then as a home care worker. Mom moved from Winnipeg to Portage la Prairie in 2009 where she settled into her own home in 2010.

In her younger years Mom’s hobbies were embroidery, crocheting, and sewing. Her infamous donuts and Christmas fruitcake were a treat, along with holupchis, perogies and other Ukrainian foods. She enjoyed her many houseplants, and flower and vegetable gardening. She shared jars of preserves of fruits, jam, pickles and vegetables with family and friends. Mom enjoyed current affairs by engaging in reading newspapers, magazines and listening to CKY and CJOB. Playing weekly BINGO and often being a winner was a favourite pastime. She was a fan of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

She was proud of her family and cherished family visits and Face Time with her granddaughters and their partners and great-grandchildren.

The family extends their appreciation to the staff of the Portage District Hospital and to Mom’s physician Dr. St. Goddard for their compassionate care.

Mom was determined to remain in her home and steadfastly refused to enter long-term care. With the support of Daughter on Call and with a special thank-you to Sharon she was able to do so.

In lieu of flowers in-memoriam donations may be made to the Canada-Ukraine Foundation (CUF).
