Obituary of REVEREND MONSIGNOR LOUIS J. MCCLOSKEY

 

Your kind prayers are requested for the repose of the soul of Reverend Monsignor Louis J. McCloskey, who passed away yesterday, in Charlottetown, PEI at the age of 86.

 

Msgr. McCloskey, the oldest son of the late Vincent and Marie (Cahill) McCloskey, was born on October 24, 1936, in Charlottetown, PEI. After graduating from St. Dunstun’s College in 1956, he attended La Grande Séminaire de Québec in Québec City and earned degrees from Laval University.

 

Msgr. McCloskey was ordained to the priesthood, for the Archdiocese of Winnipeg, on June 11, 1960, at St. Dunstan’s Cathedral Basilica in Charlottetown.

 

Msgr. McCloskey served in many parishes in the Archdiocese, including as Parochial Vicar of St. Edward’s Parish in Winnipeg (1960-65) and St. Augustine of Canterbury Parish in Brandon (1965-68). He served as Pastor at St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Russell (1968-70), Sacred Heart Parish in Virden (1970-72), St. Edward’s Parish in Winnipeg (1972-82), Notre Dame Parish in Selkirk (1982-87), St. John XXIII Parish in Winnipeg (1987-91), St. Augustine’s Parish in Brandon (1991-97), and St Theresa’s Parish in Middlechurch (1997-2008) including St. Margaret’s Parish in Little Britain (1999-2008). Monsignor served on various councils in the Archdiocese and was very involved with the Catholic Women’s League and the Knights of Columbus.

 

On December 1, 1998, he was appointed a Prelate of Honour by Pope John Paul II and given the title of Monsignor. Msgr. McCloskey retired from active ministry on June 30, 2008.

 

Funeral Liturgy was celebrated on Tuesday, June 20th, at St. Ann’s Church in Emyvale, PEI.
