John stayed around the Pine Dock area, working many jobs from a young age, his family was very important to him and wanted to help out his widowed mother as much as possible. Then in the early 1960’s he took a job as a fishing guide at Hooks Separation Lake Lodgethat would change his life forever. This is where he met the love of his life Nancy Westhaver, they were married December 2, 1967 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1968 he moved to Kenora,Ontario where he worked at Marr’s Marina and Nelsons Leisureland, then in 1971 they welcomed the birth of their only daughter Mary Anna.

John continued to take the whole family to Separation Lake, where he shared his love of the lake with them. He loved all his grandchildren equally but shared a special bond with his oldest granddaughter Jamie-Renelle because they both shared a common love for hunting and fishing. Jamie made a promise to papa that she will continue their traditions with Braxton, and they will fish their favourite spots.

John was a jack of all trades and could fix almost anything. His mind was sharp with knowledge, and up to two years ago he was still out trapping and could outrun most people on snowshoes. Right to the end, he was always fixing other peoples motors, or working on little projects to help others. He loved garage sales and was always thinking of others with his purchases.

John started his life on the West side of Lake Winnipeg, shared many happy years fishing, hunting and trapping on the English River in Northwestern Ontario, and recently at RAM camp on the East side on Lake Winnipeg.

John will return to the West side of Lake Winnipeg where a graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 24th 2023, at Pine Dock, MB, at 2:00 p.m., with a late lunch to follow at the Pine Dock Hall.

Papa, we will cherish all that you taught us, and pass on your wisdom to all future generations. We love you and miss you so much.
