Obituary of JOSEPH MELVIN SMALLEY
Joseph (Joe) Melvin Smalley
July 4, 1935 – May 9, 2023
On the morning of May 9, 2023, our father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at the Riverview Health Centre.
Dad is survived by his sons, Rob (Joanie) and Brent (Suzanne), and grandchildren Ashley, Mannon, and Neil. His brother Al (Donna), and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy, parents Joe and Ruth, and brother Gord and his wife Aileen.
Born in Kenton MB, Dad’s career with the CNR took mom and him to Portage la Prairie where their kids were born, and for a short time to Melville SK. They settled in Winnipeg where Dad retired from management at the CNR Shops in Transcona.
As a long time member at the Transcona Golf Club, Dad played a lot of golf during retirement and after our mother passed away in 2014. As passionate as he was about golf, nothing came close to his relationship with our mother, or looking after and spending time with their kids and grandchildren. Whether it was watching hockey, baseball, soccer, school plays, or concerts they were there. This was an inseparable duo, who are again side by side.
We are also proud of the fact that no matter who we come across, people have been telling us that Joe was such a nice man. This was happening years before he passed away. Which is why we know he and our family would like to thank the people at Cathedrale Manor for their help. The care and compassion for Dad since January by all the people at Holy Family. Even though they only knew us for a few hours, the palliative people at Riverview Health Centre won’t be forgotten.
A Celebration of Dad’s life will be held Friday June 2, 2023 at 1:00pm.at Cropo Funeral Chapel Transcona, 1800 Day Street.
