Obituary of MARIA ANTONIETA BORGES DA SILVA
August 31, 1936 – April 14, 2023
Maria passed away peacefully on April 14, 2023 at the Concordia Hospital in Winnipeg, MB at the age of 86. She is survived by her children: Maria (John), Carlos (Val), Jose (April), Ana (Tony), Manuel, Olivia (Chad), Ivonne; her grandchildren Sandy (Gil), Bruce, John (Michelle), Nicole (Matt), Ashley (James), Tyler, Ryan (Chey), Justin (Jasmin), Jill (Jason), Jacklyn, Chase and many great grandchildren; brother Manuel Borges and family.
She was predeceased by her mom Maria and dad Jose, her husband Augusto, her brother Carlos, grandson Brenden and great granddaughter Gracie.
Maria was born in Santa Clara, Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel, Azores where she grew up. She married her husband, Augusto, on January 16, 1955 and had seven children prior to immigrating to Canada in 1966, where they had two more children. Maria worked at The Velvet Glove for many years in food services. She was devoted to her church and collected many religious artifacts that she treasured. She was very proud of her children and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed caring for plants and shopping.
The family thanks Holy Family Home and the staff of the St. John’s Ward for their care of Maria over the last ten years and the staff at Concordia Hospital that cared for her in her last two days.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 181 Austin St. N. Interment followed in Assumption Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made out to Diabetes Canada, 207-1 Wesley Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4C6.
