HELEN SALYGA

January 31, 1924 – December 17, 2022

 

We are saddened to announce the passing of Helen on Saturday, December 17, at the age of 98 years.

 

Helen leaves to mourn her two sons Gregory (Nina) and Bert (Sean); one daughter Lorraine Just; grandchildren Jaqueline, Kristy, Dawn, Christopher, and Katrina; great grandchildren Nicholas, Portia, Sophia, Parker, Payton, Brock, and Zoey; and sister Marion Tomchuck.

 

She was predeceased by her husband Harry; parents Bert and Margaret Penonzek; brothers Louis, Frank, Joe, John, and Mike Penonzek; sisters Lilian Ushey, Zelma Skabar, and Bertha Premachuk; and son-in-law Darwin Just.

 

Helen was born in RM of Roblin, MB, and grew up on the family farm in Angusville, MB. Later she lived in Vancouver during the Second World War where she worked in airplane manufacturing. After the war she returned to Winnipeg where she met her husband, Harry, whom she married on May 26, 1958, in Angusville, MB.

 

Helen worked in catering at the International Inn and Lincoln Motor Hotel. She then worked at Fred Douglas Lodge in Winnipeg until her retirement at age 65.

 

Helen enjoyed cooking, knitting, spending time with family, playing cards, playing bingo and the occasional glass of white zinfandel wine. She enjoyed travelling and frequently visited her son Bert in San Francisco and daughter Lorraine in Vancouver. She also enjoyed her visits to her son in Dauphin, especially at Christmas time.

 

Pallbearers will be Robert Skabar, Randy Premachuk, Christopher Salyga, Brent Ewanchuk, Robert Sidak, and Gordon Lasko.

 

Prayers will be said on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Thursday, December 22, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, 965 Boyd Ave., with interment at Holy Family Cemetery, 4355 Main St., West Saint Paul.  Live stream link is  http://live.bvmp.ca
