I was an Air Cadet with Jay many years ago. When I joined #6 Jim Whitecross in the late 80s, Jay was a very senior cadet, possibly Warrant Officer. Most of us junior cadets admired Jay greatly. He was powerful, intimidating, cool, and always composed and in control of the squadron. I remember how much we wanted to impress him and do well as cadets under him - he really inspired us to do our best. I remember feeling terrified of Jay, until I made a mistake during drill and he pulled me aside to give me some coaching. I learnt Jay wasn't scary at all, he was kind and helpful with his instruction. I remember the young guys all wanted to be like Jay, to have the cool bike and get the attention from all the pretty girls. I didn't know Jay into his adult years, but he made a lasting impression in my early teens, and I'm sad to hear this news. Condolences to your family, Jay, I'm sure you're missed.
