TARAS SOKOLYK

Obituary of TARAS SOKOLYK

Taras Sokolyk passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2022 at the age of 69 after battling cancer for years with courage and determination. He will be missed by his wife Janice, son Michael (Todd), sister Geraldine Fallis (Bob), and extended family with whom he shares a special bond. Taras was predeceased by his father Michael, and his mother Anne.

Taras always referred to Dominion City as “home”. While he lived there, he was a town fixture greeting customers from behind his grocery stores’ deli counters. He often reminisced about winning baseball tournaments with the Dominion City Flyers, and cherished the relationships with friends and neighbours he grew up with.

Taras’s professional accomplishments were plentiful and diverse, and he continued to enjoy his work until weeks before he passed away. He was known for his ability to foster collaboration and accountability. While work was always a source of inspiration for Taras, he could always make time to talk politics and enjoyed cheering for his beloved St. Louis Cardinals every summer.

Taras’ family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Paul and Meghan, RN from Cancer Care Manitoba and the entire team at the Riverview Health Centre Palliative Care Program for their expertise and compassion.

A Funeral Service will be held at St. Joseph’s Ukrainian Catholic Church 250 Jefferson Avenue, Winnipeg on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. Taras’ family have requested that those attending the funeral ensure to meticulously adhere to all public health recommendations when deciding to attend, that they are not symptomatic, are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and wear a mask for the entirety of the service.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Roseau Crossing Heritage Park.
