Obituary of PATRICIA MARIE DOWNEY
PATRICIA MARIE DOWNEY
It is with deepest sorrow we announce the unexpected passing of Pat Downey, on June 10, 2022, at the Victoria General Hospital, at the age of 77.
Pat passed away peacefully and courageously with family by her side. She leaves to cherish her memory, her beloved husband Brian of 57 years. Two sons Rick (Jona), Mike (Marie) and one daughter Cheryl (Mark) all of Winnipeg. She also leaves 7 grandchildren, Alyson, Kayla, Amber, Kassya, Markus, Myley and Maciek. Also, sister Mary (Gary) and daughter Chera as well as many nieces, nephews, and siblings-in-law.
She was predeceased by her parents Gerard and Ursula Rockett.
Pat was born in Toronto on January 25, 1945. When she was 11 years old, her father was transferred to Winnipeg where the family made their new home. Pat graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in 1963 and took a job as a secretary in the insurance industry. In 1960 she met the love of her life, Brian, and they married in 1965. They moved into an apartment in Elmwood and then purchased their first home in Westwood where they resided for 29 years. Little did they know they would be moving in beside the best neighbours anyone could ask for. Pat always thought of Art and Bev and their five kids as part of her family. Later they built their new home in Southland Park.
When Pat & Brian started their family, Pat left her job at Dale & Co. and devoted her life to raising and caring for her 3 children, the highlight of her life. She was always there for Brian and the kids every step of the way, and seldom missed their numerous sports events and many other functions. This carried over to her 7 grandchildren whom she thoroughly adored. Pat had a special place in her heart for her little Poodle Toby, who was at her side for almost 18 years.
Pat was an avid sports fan and seldom missed a Bomber or Jets game. She enjoyed all sports and followed these on TV daily, with Tom Brady being her favorite player. From a young age, she enjoyed car racing and was fortunate enough to attend a Nascar race with her son Mike.
The family took many road trips with special friends, Wayne and Doreen and their children. Those trips continued for many years throughout North America. Pat especially loved touring the sports venues in various cities. They spent many summers with friends and family at their trailer at Netley Creek. A favourite of Pat’s were the extended vacations in Palm Springs with the whole family.
She made friends easily with all those she encountered and liked chatting with them over coffee wherever.
She was a member of the Roman Catholic Parish of St.Timothy.
The family wishes to extend special “thanks” to Dr. Cavers and the wonderful caregivers she raved about, who cared for her on unit 5 south at Victoria General Hospital.
As per Pat’s request, a private family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cancer Care Manitoba or the Victoria General Hospital.
