It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Husband, Father, and Grandfather, lovingly known by all he met as Joe. He passed away peacefully on the morning of Sunday, May 15th in the care of Riverview Health Centre and the presence of his family.

He will be forever missed by his loving family. Joe leaves behind his Wife Maria Fontes; Daughter Maria, Son-in-Law Linley, and Granddaughter Brianna; Son Mario, Daughter-in-Law Nadine, Granddaughter Amanda and her husband Tanner as well as their baby Charlie, Grandson Zachary and his wife Rya. He leaves behind his Sister Madalena (Eddie), Brother Manuel (Natalia). He will be lovingly remembered by the rest of his extended family across Canada, the U.S. and in the Azores.

Joe was born on the Island of Santa Maria, Azores, on October 10th 1946 to parents Joao and Filomena Fontes. He met the love of his life Maria on the Island, married in 1970 after spending some time in the army, and then immigrated to Canada to raise his family and work towards a better life. His whole life was dedicated to family and God.

We would like to thank the wonderful staff at Riverview Health Centre for their care and love. We would also like to acknowledge the amazing care he received by his physician and friend Doctor Denis Caners,  Doctor Pachal, Doctor Visch and staff at the Plessis Medical Centre who always treated him like family. We would like to acknowledge the amazing community at Park City Meadows Housing Cooperative. Joe was always appreciative of the friendships he made and we are grateful to the community that is supporting his wife Maria during these difficult days.

Prayers will be said on Tuesday, May 24th at 6:00 pm at the Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. Mass will be held on Wednesday, May 25th at 1:00 pm at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 181 Austin Street N. Burial to follow at Assumption Catholic Cemetery, 3990 Portage Ave.
