CHARLES CHURKO

Obituary of CHARLES CHURKO

CHARLES CHURKO January 20, 1914 – January 22, 2013 With his ever- sharp mind, Charles drifted quietly from this world shortly after his 99th birthday. Born on Alfred Ave. in Winnipeg, to Joseph and Sophia Churko, originally from Poland. Predeceased by his 6 older and younger siblings and his beloved wife, Anne (nee Troniuk). Left to remember him fondly are his sisters-in-law, Sally Guyda, Josie Bodyk, and Jean Grocholski. His independence, deep voice, gruff nature, great debates, adventures stories, sense of humor, and his wisdom will not be forgotten. Charlie began his education in French in rural Manitoba and finished Grade 10 at Isaac Newton School. He then searched out his learning across Canada, while ‘riding the rods’ in the 1930’s. He came home at harvest time every year and farmed in the 1940’s before going to Chicago to learn welding and refrigeration. He returned to Winnipeg and worked at Chalmers Body works and MacDonald Aircraft, then for the city at the North End Sewage Treatment Plant until his retirement in 1979. After knowing her for 24 years, he married Anne in 1952, where they lived on Atlantic Avenue for 54 years. Although they had no children, they loved their families and treated us all as their own. The legacy of Ann and Charlie’s generosity will endure for both sides of their family. Charlie was involved in the early days collecting nickels at CCF gatherings and was active CUPE member. He was a lifelong learner, keeping abreast of current events and reading voraciously. He loved playing his fiddle and saxophone with his band in the early years, and hunting, fishing and gatherings were always good excuses to enjoy the outdoors and nature. In his declining years, he was blessed by the loving support of special nephews and nieces, most especially Brian and Marlene Guyda, whose care and attention helped him have the best life possible to make it to 99. The family is also thankful for the kind care of the staff at Seven Oaks Hospital during his final journey. A funeral service will be held on Monday, January 28, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. He will be laid to rest beside Anne at Holy Ghost Cemetery in Middlechurch. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to a charity of your choice.
