Shirley May Champagne (nee Melnychuk)
May 26, 1941 - February 27, 2022
It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts we announce Shirley’s passing at the age of 80 years.
Shirley lived a life that was rich in love and adventure. At her side through all of it was her husband, soulmate, and best friend, Bert. Together, they traveled across oceans, explored new cities, turned houses into homes and shared countless laughs with friends and family.
Shirley made friends easily – and she treasured them like gold. She was an incredible host who could make magic in her kitchen (much to Bert’s delight!). She often spoiled her grandchildren with her signature chocolate chip cookies, pizza and perogies. Her table was always crowded with loved ones for every holiday or celebration.
Shirley’s drink was a gin and tonic and her laugh was like soft music. She taught all her grandkids how to play the card game Skip-Bo, cheered them on at hockey or soccer games, and would do all the ‘scary’ rides with them at Tinker Town. Her love and influence shaped many happy childhoods.
Shirley was at her best when she was with friends. She loved to golf, play bridge, and go for long walks with Bert for company. Together, Shirley and Bert had a retirement many dream of. Everything they did, they did together, right until the end.
Shirley will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 39 years, Bert; children: Kim (Dwight), Kelly (Brian), Karen (Shawn) and Bert’s children Lise and Pierre (Yudi). Grandchildren: Ryley, Payton, Lisa, Kara, Brooke, James, Johnathan, Jacqueline, Pierre, Celine and many other dear relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by her first husband of 14 years, Bill Kania, sister Sylvia, brother Dave and parents, George and Dora.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, May 15, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel Transcona, 1800 Day St.
In lieu of flowers, we ask donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Shirley’s memory.
Thank you to the staff at Seven Oaks Hospital – but a special thanks to Dr. Wilson, Allison and Mary for their care and compassion during Shirley’s last days.
