Obituary of NICOLETTA KARAGANIS

NICOLETTA (NICKI) KARAGANIS

1964 - 2022

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Nicki (Nicoletta) Karaganis on February 26, 2022. Nicki fought a long and courageous battle with cancer over the past 15 years but despite constant pain and discomfort, she always offered a smile and a gracious word to her loved ones.

Born in Winnipeg on December 22, 1964 to Matina and Themistocles (Tom) Karaganis (both of whom predeceased Nicki), she spent the majority of her childhood and young adult life living in the Spence street family home with her parents and younger brother George. It was in this neighborhood that the Karaganis and Constantinidis families became not just friends but family. Surrounded by beloved cousins, aunts, uncles, and extended family and friends, Nicki always felt loved and valued. Losing her mother, Matina, far too soon in 1986 to the same disease, had a profound impact on Nicki’s life. The irony of her final prognosis was not lost on her as she leaves her only child, Themi, to mourn the devastating loss of his mother.

Additionally, Nicki leaves to mourn brother George and his family (Ardele and Matthew), aunt Phyllis (Filia) and cousins in Canada, the US and Greece.  Nicki’s extended family and friends will greatly miss her generous, quiet and kind way of being.

Nicki always strove to provide a high level of customer service during her career as a sales associate and manager at Sears and more recently, working at the Santa Lucia restaurant on St. Mary’s. She always felt so much love, respect and support from the Simeonidis family at the St. Mary’s location.

Nicki was a person of little words but she was always direct and genuine when necessary. Away from work, Nicki enjoyed making her home warm and welcoming by thoughtfully decorating the interior in addition to creating a beautiful yard in which to relax and appreciate nature. Above all, Nicki’s greatest joy came from spending time with family especially over a delicious culinary feast she herself had prepared.

The family is grateful for the care and support Nicki received from her various healthcare providers over the years, the staff at Cancer Care MB and the end of life support team at Riverview Health Centre.

Funeral service will take place on Friday, March 4, 2022 at 11:00 am at St. Demetrious Greek Orthodox Church, 2255 Grant Avenue. Interment will take place directly after the service at Brookside Cemetery.

Nicki was a steadfast supporter of the WHS mission of protecting animals from suffering, and promoting their welfare and dignity. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Winnipeg Humane Society would be greatly appreciated.
