Obituary of ILIDIO de OLIVEIRA BERGANTIM

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ilidio Oliveira Bergantim, our dear husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, at the age of 79 on May 2, 2021. Ilidio passed away peacefully at home after a long struggle with various health conditions.

His memory will forever be cherished by his loving wife Maria Lourdes, his children Nelson (Bridget), Susy (Carlos) and Nancy (Geoffrey), his grandchildren Myles, Braedon, Savannah, Michael, Daniel, Katrina, Andrea and Emma, his siblings Carlos (Eulalia) and Lucia, along with numerous in-laws, nephews, nieces and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Manuel and Virginia, his brothers Manuel and Jose.

Ilidio was born July 2, 1941 in Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal. He was drafted to the Portuguese military at age 20, and was promoted to Sargent, deployed to Angola and recognized with several bravery awards. Upon returning to Azores, he met his lifelong love, Maria Lourdes and married on September 7, 1967, then immigrated to Canada where he built his life and family. Ilidio was devoted to his family, enjoyed gatherings and outings with extended family and friends. He volunteered many years at Immaculate Conception Parish serving the community and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a thoughtful person who was always ready to help anyone and will be greatly missed by so many.

Thank you to the many medical teams and hospitals who were part of Ilidio’s care, the staff at WRHA Palliative Program (special thank you to Tamara and Kendra), and home care services.

If family and friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, The Kidney Foundation or Alzheimers Society of Manitoba.

While we wish we could share this with the many family and friends who will miss him dearly, we are observing the current Health Orders. A private Catholic service and burial will be celebrated and officiated by Father Andre Lico.
