METRO GAWIUK

Obituary of METRO GAWIUK

At the age of 91 years, Metro Gawiuk, suddenly and peacefully took his leave of this world and entered into the presence of his Lord on Saturday, March 27, 2021.

Born in 1929 and raised on a half section of land in Elphinstone, Manitoba, Metro was the last surviving child to predeceased parents Fedir (Fred) Gawiuk and Tetiana (Katie) Gawiuk (Harsymchuk), seven brothers and 2 sisters, most recently his sister Olga Boychuk.  Metro was the last sibling.  The chain is no more.

Metro is predeceased by his wife Helen (Lazaruk) of 42 years who passed in 1995.  They so enjoyed life, family, friends, travelling and cottage life.  They enjoyed hosting many family and friends’ dinners and get-togethers.  As time passed, Metro embraced life with his partner Verna Goods for many years until her passing in 2008.

Metro worked hard all his life.  He was a Transit driver for 11 years, custodian for Angus McKay for 20 years, Springfield Heights for a number of years and custodian at River East Collegiate where one of his nieces Lynnell Powell (Lazaruk) attended school.  Metro held 11 jobs through his lifetime before retirement. He was very proud he never ever collected E.I.  But it didn’t end there…

After retirement he worked part-time at bingo at the Portuguese Association on Notre Dame.  They were like family to him and he was sorry to leave due to failing health.  Metro spent many years volunteering at perogi making at Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Parish on Watt Street.

Metro loved the outdoors, golfing, gardening, fishing, picking strawberries and mushrooms.  He became quite a cook, soup maker and especially his coleslaw and pork & beans.

Metro enjoyed spending time with his many friends at Agape Villa where he resided, and time spent with his family.  He was always there for you in good times and bad, laughter and tears.  We will miss his smiling face.  His was a life well lived with laughter lines, jokes, shared love, treasured memories and no regrets.  That is his legacy to those who knew and loved him.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and Metro will be laid to rest with his wife Helen at Holy Family Cemetery.

Due to Covid 19, a private family and friends graveside service will take place by invitation only.
