Obituary of ALFREDA MARCELA WICHER
ALFREDA MARCELA WICHER
December 29, 1935 – January 1, 2021
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Alfreda in Seven Oaks Hospital on January 1, 2021.
Alfreda was predeceased by her parents Andrzej and Helena (Mitkowska) Wicher, fiance Bronislaw and her brother Zygmunt.
Alfreda was born in Tomaszowka, Dubno, Poland. During WW2, her entire family was deported from their home and sent to labour camp. Alfreda was only 5 years old at the time. They miraculously escaped from the train and found refuge in the homes of the Polish highlanders (Gorale) in the Karpaty Mountains.
After the war ended, Alfreda and her family settled in Wroclaw, Poland. It was there that Alfreda began her education and later on enrolled at the University of Wroclaw. Renowned for its relatively high quality of teaching, Alfreda excelled in her studies which included mathematics, physics and chemistry. Always at the top of her class, Alfreda graduated with a Masters in Chemistry in 1961.
Her passion of learning turned into a love of teaching. She would always find reasons to take her students out for excursions, either hiking in the beauty of nature or through the streets of the city and admire its diverse architecture.
During Alfreda's time at the university, she met the love of her life, fiance Bronislaw. Tragically, he passed away accidentally during a mountain climbing expedition. Her great love for him was never lost and she never married.
In a search for prosperity, Alfreda followed in her brother Zygmunt's footsteps and came to Canada. Alfreda loved the beauty and vastness of her new home.
Alfreda's great devotion for her faith was without question and never ending. She was a decades-long parishioner of Holy Ghost Roman Catholic Church and regularly attended mass.
Viewing and Koronka will take place on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at 9:30am at Holy Ghost Roman Catholic Church, 341 Selkirk Avenue; followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am with Oblate Father officiating. Interment to follow in Holy Ghost Cemetery 4387 Main Street, Winnipeg.
