Obituary of ÁRPÁD LAJOS (LOU) FÜREDY

ÁRPÁD LAJOS (LOU) FÜREDY

August 27, 1936 – November 29, 2020

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Árpád Lajos (Lou) Füredy, husband of Elizabeth, father of Paul and George, grandfather of Andrew, friend to all and talented artist.

These are his final words:

“I was born in Budapest, Hungary, and was educated and toiled as a technologist at Csepel.  I participated and was a member of a freedom fighting unit in the Hungarian 1956 revolution.  Fighting communism was daring and outright lunacy, but necessary and was a glorious feeling.  I was captured by a T-34 tank brigade and held for five days and interrogated by the feared “AVO”.  Having such a record, I had to escape from my homeland on January 7th, 1957 to Austria.  After six months time I flew to Canada via Iceland and landed in Moncton as a new émigré; worked on the rails towards Hamilton, then on to Winnipeg.  There I met my beautiful brunette Elizabeth Csapo and married her promptly.  Soon we were blessed with two handsome boys, Richard Paul and George Andrew - I am very proud of them.  I worked in heavy construction management and retired from Darco Enterprises.  I am thankful for all the wonderful people and friends who helped me along my journey in Canada. I am especially indebted to the Nynych family.

I came into this world with nothing, but I am taking delightful memories with me!  According to my wishes, my cremation has taken place and no formal service was held.  A private interment and gravesite ceremony for my family will occur at a later date.

Please don’t cry because I am gone. Instead, be happy that I was here.

To all who remember me – I ask that you celebrate my life in your own way. (Raising a glass of red wine would be quite appropriate.)  God bless you all!”

We will sorely miss our Dad, Uncle Lou and Árpi bacsi to many.  He impressed upon us his love of art, history, music, travel, and cultures of all kinds.  He loved to paint -profusely – and he was recognized for his amazing artistic skills that brought lots of joy and astonishment to so many.  In the time we had with him, during his “– “ (dash)... our dear Dad, Apa, Poppa, and husband to Elizabeth lived his life very well indeed.  He’d have said these departing words to each and every one of us: “I’m okay! Be good and take care of each other.”  Then with a warm smile, he’d give a big thumbs up.
