Obituary of SIGRUN JULIANA ZATORSKY

Sigrun Juliana ( Julie) Zatorsky ( nee: Goodman) May 14, 1926- October 30, 2020 Sadly, we announce Julie’s passing, peacefully on October 30, 2020, after contracting Covid 19. She resided at Maples Personal Care Home for the past five years and we appreciate the compassionate care provided by the staff while there. Julie was born May 14, 1926 in Oak Point, Manitoba, into a loving, large Icelandic family. She was very proud of her Icelandic heritage. After living in various Manitoba lake towns, the family settled in Winnipeg in St.James. The family was very poor but the house was always full of laughter and the high jinks of 10 girls and 2 boys. Julie started her working career in her dad’s boat building shop (Goodman’s Canoe and Boat Works), helping to build the boats and also doing the bookkeeping. She then worked at Radio Labs where she met her husband Walter and married in 1949. Together they purchased a house on Bannerman Avenue in the North End, where they lived for 54 years and raised their two children Kathy and Rick. Julie and Walter shared a love of animals and their home was always filled with pets. There was never a time they did not have a cat. After being a stay at home mom for a number of years, Julie began working for the Winnipeg School Division, first part time at St. John’s High School, and later at the Library Services Centre on Notre Dame Avenue, in the cataloguing department, from 1973-1994, where she made many life long friends. Julie always loved books and was an avid short story author, winning many local contests and publishing stories in various magazines and newspapers. One of our favourite stories about her father and the family dog was published in the book Chicken Soup for the Canadian Soul. Julie was predeceased by her loving husband Walter (2003), son Rick (2007), son-in-law Doug Youngson (2004), her parents Katrin Bjorg (Bertha) and Julius Goodman, brother Bobby Goodman, sisters Freda Johnson, Anna Hargreaves, Lily Smith, Disa Brown, Sally Eamens, Bella Cruikshank, Ruby Cowan, Jean MacKenzie, and an infant sister. Julie leaves to mourn, her sister Margie Steven (Tom); brother Don Goodman; daughter Kathy Youngson; grandson Ryan Youngson (Jelena), great granddaughters Mila and Tiana; grandson Erik Youngson ( Jennilee), great grandson Henrik; granddaughter Kristine Zatorsky (Brooke); sister-in-law Jennie Middleton. Nothing was more important to Julie than family, and we will miss her good nature and especially her great sense of humour. In her later years, her greatest joy was spending time with her three great grandchildren. Cremation has taken place, and in the spring Julie’s ashes will be interred at Glen Eden next to her husband and son. Donations welcome to the Winnipeg Pet Rescue Centre, the New Iceland Heritage Museum in Gimli, or a charity of one’s choice. Goda nott elsku mamma. Condolences can be left at Cropo.com
