Obituary of Edmond Normand

EDMOND NORMAND Known as “Wilf” or “Cigar” Born: December 2, 1938 Deceased: April 10, 2020 It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Edmond Normand. Edmond, who was known to many family members and friends as “Wilf” or long time nick name “Cigar” was a proud father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and uncle. Wilf was born December 2, 1938 in St. Boniface Manitoba and passed on April 10. 2020 at The Middle Church Home of Winnipeg where he resided for a short period of time. Wilf had been fighting the lonely disease of Dementia for several years and shortly after moving to The Middle Church Home of Winnipeg, was diagnosed with prostate cancer that had spread to his bones. He made the decision not to have treatment or medical intervention and with that decision he left this life on his own terms. This gave him back some dignity that the ever so cruel dementia robbed from him some time ago. Wilf married his first wife Simone Szustygesto in 1963. They had 5 daughters Barbara, Darlene, Suzanne, Michele, and Colette. Their marriage turned out to be less permanent than either had expected and the couple divorced. A short time after, Wilf met Peggy, who was to become his second wife. Wilf married Peggy and adopted Peggy’s daughter Katherine. Together the couple had a daughter of their own and in memory of Wilf’s mother Olympe Lylienne who passed in 1950, they named her Lee Olympe Normand. Wilf had always been a hard-working man, and after working 8 years as a shipper for Universal Printers, he started delivering pizza as well as driving cab. He stopped delivering pizzas but continued to drive cab and retired in his late 60’s Wilf liked to play as hard as he had worked. He could always be found at the local bar or legion enjoying an O.V. or a rum and coke. He was always puffing on a cigar, which is how he earned his nickname ‘Cigar'. We will miss his well -known expressions: “Mighty Fine, and so divine”, ”Back of the Bus” and “Don’t be facetious”. He won many awards and tournaments playing leagued shuffleboard, baseball, and bowling. Wilf was widowed in 1995 when his wife passed at the young age of 41. He continued to raise his daughter Lee. Wilf and Lee stayed together until 2010. Having lived with Lee for so many years Wilf had an active role in raising his granddaughters, Kaylee and Kierra. Between 2011 and 2012 Wilf stayed with Katherine and then Suzanne. After almost 20 years of mourning his wife Peggy, Wilf met and moved in with Donna. Wilf remained with Donna until 2019 when his disease of dementia made it evidently clear that Wilf required more care that the two could handle. Wilf then, stayed with Lee until suitable arrangements were made. Wilf was predeceased by his parents, Olympe Lylienne Delorme, and Joseph Albert Normand, wife Peggy Normand (Nee Daniels) and daughter Barbara Harris (Nee Normand) Wilf is survived by his sister Claire Rowe (Nee Normand), Daughters Darlene, Suzanne, Michelle, Colette (Chris), Katherine (Richard) and Lee (Mark), 14 grandchildren as follows: Rychele, Michael, Taylor, Anthony, Brennan, Cheyenne, Andre, Alycia, Kaylee, Kierra, Grayson, Lexah, Kaitlyn and Kaiya. Also 6 great grandchildren as follows: Peyton, Chloe, Nolan, Serena, Ephraim and Oliver. We would like to thank Don Babey and the Cropo Funeral Chapel for their sensitivity and professionalism while making all necessary arrangements. In accordance to Wilf’s wishes there will be no service. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in accordance to Covid-19. We are comforted in knowing that Wilf Normand remembers who Wilf Normand is again.
