Obituary of NADIA DOWHAYKO

NADIA DOWHAYKO Our family is deeply saddened to announce the passing on Monday, April 20, 2020, of our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother Nadia Dowhayko at the age of 91 after a courageous battle with cancer. Nadia was predeceased by her husband Dmytro (May 23,2004) and her sister Anna (July 9, 2009). She leaves behind to cherish her memory, daughter Katherine (Bill) Miske of Calgary, sons Paul (Peggy) of Winnipeg, Wally (Susan) of Windsor, and Michael (Susan) of Winnipeg, 10 grand children, Nadine (Joe), David (Carla), Dawn (Vitaly), Jamie (Danielle), Nicholas, Sasha (Sawyer) Natalie, Stefan (Julia), Patrick, Logan (Megan) and 8 great grandchildren. Nadia was born on September 17, 1928 in Hluchiw, Ukraine. She survived many difficult challenges, including the Holodomor (famine) of 1932/33 in Ukraine which claimed 4 million people and of which she was one of the few remaining survivors. Having arrived in Winnipeg in 1950 with her husband and 2 small children, a strong work ethic, family values, and faith in God and the Orthodox Church helped the family achieve a life she could only dream of. She was an amazing cook, avid reader and had an extraordinary gift for gardening. She will be greatly missed by all that came to know her. Vichnaya Pamyat A funeral service will be held for the immediate family followed by a celebration of life to be arranged at a later date when larger gatherings are allowed. Live stream will be available by visiting the Cropo website on day of service on Nadia’s tribute page. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Nadia's memory to St Mary The Protectress Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church, 820 Burrows Ave, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R2X 0R2
