Obituary of JOSE AGOSTINHO BARROS COSTA
JOSE AGOSTINHO BARROS COSTA
Born April 19, 1937
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jose Agostinho Barros Costa on April 8, 2020, at the age of 82, in Winnipeg Manitoba.
Jose is survived by his wife Maria; children, Carlos(Tammy), Jose, Sandra, and Kevin (Allison); grandchildren, Cassandra, Jayden, Lucas, Nicholas, Juliana, and Adelaide, all in Winnipeg; brothers, Manuel (Conceicao), Antonio (Isaura); sisters, Valariana and Carmen (Manuel), all in Portugal; he also leaves to mourn his many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents, Agostinho, and Carmelinda; and brother Fernando.
Jose was born in Alijo, Tras os Montes, Portugal on April 19, 1937, where he grew up until he immigrated to Lobito, Angola, in his early 20’s. There he played competitive futebol for the FC Lobito League, served in the Angolan War of Independence, and worked for the Benguela Rail-way. In 1963 Jose married his beautiful wife, Maria, and they began planting the seeds for their future kin.
In 1977, Jose and his family immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba. There he worked for the Cana-dian National Railway until his retirement. Jose dedicated his life to providing for his wife, chil-dren, and grandchildren. He was not a man of many words, but he did not lean back from sup-porting those around him. He could often be found working in his yard during his spare time. His modo was, if he was mowing the lawn or shovelling snow, then it made sense, since he was al-ready doing it, to do it for his neighbours as well. This was an example of his work ethic, com-munity building and kindness towards others. One of Jose’s passions was futebol, he played it professionally, recreationally, cheered for his favourite Portuguese team FCP, and was an avid fan of the FIFA World Cup. He also enjoyed listening to Portuguese music and dancing with his wife at formal events. Another of his favourite hobbies was reflecting fondly and storytelling of his lived experience in Angola, those were the memories he delighted in the most.
You will be greatly missed Pai. Rest in Peace. Descansa em Paz. Sempre juntos no nosso cor-acao.
On behalf of Jose’s family, we would like to thank all the people who provided him comfort, care and compassion during the past year he spent in the care home. We are truly grateful.
A private family service will be held on April 15, 2020 at Cropo Funeral Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to the Alzheimers Society of Manitoba.
