Obituary of ALFRED TOBER
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alfred, our beloved father and Opa, who peacefully passed away in his home at the age of 88. He is dearly mourned by his wife Maria, sons Robert (Wendy), Alfred, daughter Dianne (Graham), and grandchildren, Aaron, Ryan, Hannah, Jackson, Simon and Toby.
Born August 08, 1931 in Poland, Alfred was the youngest of six children. He survived the toils of war and came to Canada in 1954 to start a new life. A skilled tradesman, his first job was bellhop at Chateau Lake Louise before heading to Winnipeg. Here he met the love of his life and finally settled in St. James to raise his family.
Dad was a master bricklayer, trained in Germany. He was constantly in demand and ran his own successful business. We are comforted that we can take in his craftsmanship when in our homes and in the architecture around the city.
As a founding member of the St. Hubertus club, he was an avid duck hunter and top-ranked skeet shooter. He enjoyed many fishing trips to Seven Sisters, cottage life at Brereton Lake and mushroom picking in Stead, Manitoba. He was also an active member of the Winnipeg German Society. Alfred had a gift of making friends easily and a wonderful sense of humour. He had a relaxing personality, a calm laid back manner and joyfully did work with a whistle and hum. Dad was also no stranger to a good long nap.
Opa was very active in his children’s lives and loved to spend quality time with his grandchildren. He joked, played cards and built play structures for them all. Later, as his illness took hold he still joked and was so happy with a simple life and little things. “It’s a good life” he always said. We will miss him dearly.
The Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, March 12 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 65 Walnut St, with interment at Brookside Cemetery to follow.
