Obituary of OLGA HOMENUK

IN LOVING MEMORY OF

OLGA HOMENUK

October 23, 1929 - May 31, 2019

Olga was born on October 23, 1929, in Gascoigne, Saskatchewan to William and Rose Syroiszka and was one of five children. She left the farm at about 16 years of age to join her older sister Mary in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The two sisters lived together and worked in the garment industry. Her dream was to become a hairdresser, but it was never meant to be.

She met her future husband, Andrew Homenuk, in 1949 and married on June 24, 1950. They made their home in Winnipeg, Manitoba and had three daughters, Marie, Violet and Gail. Two of the girls were taken away much too soon - Violet Virginia at five months and Gail Louise at 33 years of age.

Olga was a loving wife and mother. In her spare time, she loved gardening and playing bingo. She crocheted many beautiful doilies, was an excellent cook and a fantastic baker. Her cabbage rolls, borscht, perogies and salmon patties will be missed by all those who were fortunate enough to try them.

Olga worked hard all of her life - first on the farm, then in Winnipeg in the garment and catering industries. She was always ready to help those in need and put her family above herself. She shared what little she had with her loved ones.

Olga lost her husband Andrew to cancer in 1987. She used to say that “it’s much easier for two horses to pull a load, than only one.” So true. Life can be an uphill struggle for many people, and Olga sure had her share of hardships. She made the best of life and always maintained that life is precious.

Her last few years were spent at the Golden Door Geriatric Center, where she received excellent care. She fought hard until the very end. She will be missed dearly by her family and all who knew her. Now she is finally at peace and has gone to join her loved ones in Heaven.

A Memorial Gathering will be held on Sunday, June 9 at 12:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street.

Always so good, unselfish and kind

Few on this earth her equal we find.

Honourable and upright in all her ways,

Loyal and true to the end of her days,

When life is over and our work is done,

When loneliness and heartaches are all gone,

Long days, long nights, she bore her pain,

To wait for a cure, but all in vain,

Till God Himself knew what was best,

He took her home and gave her rest.
