EDUARDO FURTADO

Obituary of EDUARDO DA COSTA FURTADO

EDUARDO DA COSTA FURTADO

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Eduardo Furtado on Monday, March 25, 2019.  Eduardo passed away peacefully at the age of 84 years old.

Eduardo was the last surviving family member of parents (Manual and Maria Furtado).  He will be lovingly remembered by the love of his life of 59 years Arlete Furtado; children and spouses (Tony and Filomena), (Acacio and Jo-Anne); grandchildren (Michael, Nancy and Aidan). He will be lovingly remembered by his sister-in-law (Armenia), brother-in-law (Jose), his niece (Estrella), husband (Roberto), nephew (Michael) and niece (Selina).  His greatest joy was his grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Eduardo was born on December 6, 1934 in Ribeira Grande on Sao Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal. He married Arlete in 1960 in Ribeira Grande, where he owned and worked at a flour mill with his brother.

Eduardo immigrated to Canada in 1969 to make a better life for his family.  He came to Canada first to find work and a home and was joined by Arlete and his children (Tony and Acacio) shortly after.  The home he bought when he first came to Winnipeg is where they have since spent over 45 years in.

Eduardo began first working in construction and later worked for the City of Winnipeg, Water division where he retired at age 60.  After he retired, Eduardo’s strong work ethics lead him to help open a family business called Sporting Club with both of his sons. In his later years he spent much of his time at the Portuguese store on William Avenue.

Eduardo’s traditional ways influenced his need to have goats, chickens and rabbits and the occasional “pet” pig in his garage.  He planted a vegetable garden in his thumb sized front yard which was appreciated by many. Eduardo prided himself on making homemade wine and chourico in his basement.  He always made way more then he would ever need to make sure he had plenty for family, friends and neighbors.  He loved spending time at the Portuguese club watching his favorite soccer team Sporting Clube Da Portugal.

Eduardo’s story-telling abilities to his grandchildren, nephews and nieces most enjoyed hearing his colourful recollections of these events from years ago and were captivated by his tales, which always ended with a laugh. Stories were about him, the children and various shenanigans during his younger years.  He always seemed to be at the center of attention when he walked into a room within his Portuguese community. His stories will be fondly remembered and he will be truly missed.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Palliative / Home Care staff for their compassion and care to Eduardo during his last days.
