Obituary of OMER ABAS
OMER ABAS
1925-2019
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Omer Abas. Omer was born to Ali and Jemillia Abas on January 20, 1925, in Hodgson, Manitoba, and peacefully passed away on February 24, 2019 at Percy E. Moore Hospital. Left to mourn his passing are his wife of 44 years Rushdie, his son Garry, his daughters Nellie (Spencer Kennedy) and Jenny, along with his grandchildren River, Ben, and Grace. Omer was a loyal and devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He was an extremely humble, kind and gentle man, who held the importance of family, above all else, in the highest regard. Omer lived his entire 94 years on the homestead his parents pioneered, and had a great respect for the land and nature. Undoubtedly, Omer will be remembered and missed most for his love of story-telling, his beautiful singing voice, his wonderful smile, and good humor.
Omer was predeceased by his father, mother, father in-law Eunice Eltasse, mother in-law Amnee Eltasse, brother Joseph Abas (Hilda Tasse), sisters Lillian Norton (Clint), Freda Austin (Albert), Annie Hagar (Abe), Dora Scaletta (Zeno), brother in-laws Andrew Gulay, Khaled Eltasse, and Ismaine Eltasse, along with sister in-law Fatime Assaf (Ahmad). He is survived by his brother Ernest Abas (Anne El Tassi), his sister Irene Gulay, his sister in-laws Aichee Hajar, Laila Eltasse, and Marayam Eltasse, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the medical staff at Percy E Moore hospital, the Palliative Care team, and the dedicated homecare staff who provided excellent care to Omer and his family over the past many years. Most notably family would like to thank friend and neighbour Lori Shepell, who regularly went above and beyond caring for Omer and supporting his family.
Prayers were held at the Grand Mosque (2445 Waverly Street, Winnipeg) on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at 1:00p.m., followed by interment in Hodgson Cemetery at 4:30pm.
Pallbearers were Garry Abas, River Abas, Spencer Kennedy, Dale Abas, Keith Abas, and Boyd Abas.
In lieu of flowers, family ask you consider donating to a charity of your choice in honour of Mr. Abas.
