Dear mom, Carole and family
I was far away and remember when I heard of your passing. It broke my heart and has taken me this long to accept we will not be having lunches and talking about family and our futures. You and I had lunch a few days before I left to Costa Rica and I had no idea that that it would be the last. You were a defender of people who didn’t have a voice and went beyond any expectation to make things right in the world. You protected people in the workplace when no one else would. I absentmindedly think about dialling you up for advice and realize that number will not be answered. You were my friend and colleague and I miss you dearly. I know God has a plan and you are in heaven looking over your family and friends. Godspeed as they say and we will see each other again

It has been over 2 weeks since we learned of your passing, Dan, and I'm still in shock. I cannot even begin to understand how your family and friends are feeling and I too am very fortunate to be called a friend of yours. In reading the many notes of condolences there are many common themes of friendship, loyalty, love and most of all support. You have been a loud, proud supporter of many including myself and for that, I am so grateful. The first thing you would always ask me every single time is, "How's the family? How's your Mom?" and you would never let me forget how I helped you in your time of need during a trip to Edmonton a number of years ago. We've worked together; laughed together; had lunch together; most of all shared in each other's lives, if even only in the conversational moment. Both from the personal and the professional perspectives you have given of yourself, tremendously and gently.
You never stopped caring - even though you might have pretended to - about people or your job. Your love of learning, and creating, laughing and caring will be missed by all who knew you. You had a deep and good soul that lifted people up without even knowing it.
To Dan's family and Wilson and Lucky, his pride and joy, I am deeply sorry for your loss. Dan may have felt that no one would notice him leaving our world, but many of us have. You Dan, have left a hole, where you were once whole yourself.
Rest in peace ~ I shall miss you and our chats.

My condolences to Dan's family. He was such a kind man. When I first started with TC I was fortunate to go on the helicopter with Dan as our pilot. He loved what he did and showed passion in his career. Dan always took the time to ask how I was doing and how my new job was going. I will miss our conversations but will cherish the memories.

I had the pleasure of working with Dan for the past 8 years.
A big jovial guy, but also someone who was very passionate about his work, who took the safety of the flying public very seriously, and stood his ground on these matters.
We had policing and aviation careers in common, and had many a memorable discussion about helicopters.
Gone too soon. He will be missed.
Sincerest condolences to Dan’s family, friends and colleagues on his passing.

To Dans family, Carol and all of his friends and acquaintances my wife Shelly and I offer our sympathies and deepest condolences on the death of someone that I always considered true "friend".
Although Dan and I have not been in touch for many years being connected as very good friends in our younger years impacted and helped shaped me into who I am today.
I too met Dan in High school and through the various activities we were involved with we formed a strong friendship as young men moving into the next chapter of our lives . This journey identified that we shared and travelled on very similar personal and professional paths.
As I reflect on my time knowing Dan some simple aspects of his character have imprinted on me in ways that have shaped who I am. One being his brutal honesty the other being his philosophical outlook toward life. Funny though I could not master his infectious laugh.
I hold the many memories of our friendship very close to my heart. I am saddened that circumstance will not afford me/us to rekindle our relationship as was always hoped for. But, knowing that Dan has made a ever lasting contribution to the all of the lives he touched lessens that sadness and provides great comfort and happiness to me.
May you Rest in Peace my friend. You will Always be remembered.

In Memory of Dan Stelman
It is with great sadness that we offer our condolences and sympathy to Carol and the Stelman family. May you find peace in this very difficult time as you read wonderful words of tribute from Dan’s many friends. They speak to the character of a very good man.
Dan and I met at St. John’s High School in the early 1970’s when we were teenagers. It didn’t take long to truly come to admire Dan. He was upbeat, positive, intelligent and fun loving. Dan was a wonderful caring young man back then, and that was certainly his lifelong trademark as one can see from many stories told on these pages.
He loved adventure and the outdoors; we spent many hours of our youth backpacking across Spruce Woods Provincial Park, canoeing on the Bird River and cross-country skiing in White Shell and Birds Hill Park. Dan was truly our adventurous leader who showed us how to celebrate life amongst the pine trees, rivers and lakes of Manitoba.
I was fortunate to be a friend of Dan’s in the early days and witness his career milestones. I will never forget the smile on his face and the sense of accomplishment that he exuded when he finished his studies at the police academy and became a member of the Winnipeg Police Service, or when he received his helicopter pilot’s licence. Dan was courageous and took on difficult challenges with a “can do attitude.” Dan was a natural leader and a true inspiration. He was my hero.
Dan was a kind person and had a strong sense of how to help people when they were struggling. His infectious laugh, “can do attitude” and supportive words helped me during some challenging times in my early years. I was leaving Winnipeg and heading to Edmonton for work and my first venture into the real world as a young man. I was struggling with some life issues and didn’t feel like making the 1300 km drive alone. So when I asked or hinted that it would be great if Dan would drive to Edmonton with me (one way of course) he didn’t hesitate for a minute and he became my companion and support on that road trip that brought me west 40 years ago. Over the past few days I pondered how supportive he was in a difficult and unsure time of my life and how lucky I was to have him beside me.
We kept in touch as best we could over those 40 years visiting when and where we could as he crisscrossed Canada in his aviation career and I crisscrossed Canada in a business career.
When I told my adult daughters (Elyssa & Tamara) of Dan’s passing, even though they did not know him very well, they said, “he was a really nice man.” It interesting how my young daughter’s picked up on his genuine and caring qualities when they were merely little girls at the times of our visits. This is a true testament to Dan because he won the love and favour of children.
My life has been marked by the kindness, support and good nature of my friend Dan Stelman and for that I am truly grateful.
I love you Dan, God bless you and keep you safe!

Wow, so young. I will remember Dan fondly. He made me laugh. He was so nice and I enjoyed chatting with him and working with him in Edmonton and also while he was in Winnipeg. I would give him a hard time as he didn't know much Ukrainian and would tell me what I said was slang, which it probably was.
I hear from others the good he has done and the lives he has touched and Dan will be missed by many. Thank you Dan for being a part of my life.

I met Dan in 2015 shortly after I returned from the Middle East while working at Chinook Helicopters I was assigned to provide Dan recurrent ground school and simulator training to prepared him to transition to the aircraft, during that period of time we get along, we talk about the experiences we had in aviation and life ...Dan mentioned that at the beginning of his career he had an accident and how he recovered from that experience ... a few days later a young international student pilot had an incident while flying solo a few hours before his final check ride... I was living at the Chinook House in the airfield... I decided to have a dinner party for the young pilot that had the incident. I invite his classmates and Dan, he pass along his experience and how he had recovered from the accident he had starting his career and develop a successful career thereafter until being an Aviation Safety System inspector for Transport Canada ...the time that Dan spend sharing his experience was extremely important for this young aviator to recover his confidence back and returned to finish the flight time he was missing to successfully passed his check ride to obtained his helicopter commercial pilots license after the investigation was finished ..and proceed with his career
That was Dan always willing to help...and I know that first hand Dan was huge support for me to transition back from an international airline pilot to the new life I was trying to build in Canada and adapt to the present Canadian aviation industry
Dan said to me that he didn't know the concept of friendship ...I said to him that he was mistaken and that he understood the concept of friendship better than many people that use that term very easy with no substance and that the perfect example of friendship was the friendship we developed since the day we met in Chinook Helicopters ...
We spend lots of time talking about aviation and aviation safety for Dan that was paramount in his thoughts, as well as our outlook in life ..he always was trying to make things better and on the process help people as he always said that he will fight a good fight on behalf of others that couldn't... he said that was the policeman in him ...and that was noticed he was awarded The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal that was created in 2012 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the ascension of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to the throne. The medal was awarded by the Governor-General of Canada to those who have made outstanding and exemplary contributions to their communities or to Canada as a whole.
During our conversations, Dan mentioned the love he had for his family and that includes Wilson and Lucky. He mentioned the moral and principles taught by his parents, the strength of his mother, how proud he was from his bother, sister in law and his two bright nieces and how Carol make a positive impact since they met in the Arctic and how important she was for him.
Thank you, Dan, for been an outstanding friend and the brother I never had
