Obituary of DORIS JEAN INGRAHAM
DORIS JEAN INGRAHAM
June 29, 1924 – November 20, 2018
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother Doris.
She was predeceased by her husband John in 2001; her parents Dr. and Mrs. T.M. Darrington and sister Kay Doyle.
Doris leaves to cherish her memory; children Cynthia Gyles (Warren) and Andrea Brown (Peter); grandchildren Jessica Gyles (Tom), Adam Vinci (Samantha) and Alessandra Vinci; her sister Marge Relf of White Bear Lake, MN and many nieces and nephew Tom Doyle.
Mom was born in Eau Claire, WI and grew up in Stillwater, MN. She attended University of Minnesota and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. This is where Dad’s eye caught sight of a pretty brunette and asked her on a date. Little did she know she would be coming to Canada which became her home for the rest of her life.
Married in 1948, Mom became a wonderful homemaker and mother. Doris grew to love living in Winnipeg and without family in Canada, the Swails became a part of our family every Christmas. Mom’s bridge club, together for over 50 years also became her lifelong friends.
Doris came from an era of nursing that was white cap, duty shoes and the Florence Nightingale pledge. She recalled nursing patients during the polio epidemic of 1953 and the impact of the disease on the patients’ lives. Doris was a nursing educator at the Grace Hospital for over 15 years and was a role model for the standards of her profession. She was affectionately known as “ Super Nurse” to our friends.
Doris enjoyed artistic creativity and loved the Arts; WAG, RWB and the WSO Pops. She too was creative, knitting sweaters and coats that remain a part of her legacy. Mom and Dad loved the cottage at West Hawk Lake and had many years of enjoyment there. Later in retirement they were actively involved in Rotary. Mom volunteered with the Canadian Arthritis Society and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Women’s Committee. She was a member of the American Women’s Club of Winnipeg.
Doris enjoyed living at Shalom Gardens. Her neighbours were so kind and caring and we thank you all, especially Gerald Sandell.
A Celebration of Doris’s Life will be held on Tuesday, December 4, 1:00 p.m. at The Pavilion, Assiniboine Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Memory of the Doris Ingraham Fund at the Winnipeg Foundation,1350 One Lombard Place, Winnipeg, MB R3B OX3. Tel 204-944-9474. www.wpgfdn.org.
