Obituary of CHRISTINA (KRYSTYNA) JACHNOWIEC

Christina (Krystyna) Jachnowiec

Christina Jachnowiec passed away peacefully in her sleep early Tuesday, November 13, 2018. 

Christina was born in 1926 in Lwow in what was then part of Poland.  She lived in Lwow from birth with her family during the period preceding World War II and during the war.  Following the war, her family, along with most of the Polish community in Lwow, was forceably relocated to areas of what became part of western Poland after the war.  Christina and her family settled in Olesnica in 1946. 

Life in postwar Poland was often difficult. Christina had started corresponding with Dan Kohut in Rosa, Manitoba and then Christina made the decision, with encouragement from her family, to seek a better life in Canada.  Christina immigrated to Canada in 1964, sailing into the Port of Montreal with just five dollars.  She was met in Montreal by Dan Kohut.  Soon they were married and living in Rosa. 

In September 1965 her daughter, and pride and joy, Madeline, was born in Winnipeg.  Dan Kohut passed away in 1969, leaving Christina and Madeline together.  They continued to live in Rosa and Christina made a good home, surrounded by the large Kohut family and friends.  She baked delicious pastries, smoked her own hams and always had room for guests.  She loved cooking, music, politics, reading and her friends and family. 

Christina and Madeline moved to Winnipeg in 1981, living first on Henderson Highway and later in a home they owned together in North Kildonan.   

Christina continued to be close to her family in Poland, visiting on several occasions.  She was predeceased by her father, Piotr Wojtowicz, her mother, Magdalena Wojtowicz, her brother, Tadeusz, and her sister, Maria.  Christina is remembered by her family in Poland, including Barbara Turska, Barbara’s daughters, Magdalena and Katarzyna, Ursula Pukaluk, Ursula’s son, Piotr, and Bozena Piatkowska and Bozena’s sons, Lukacz and Wojtek, and Sylvester Wojtowicz.

Christina is remembered in Manitoba by daughter Madeline Kohut and her husband Gordon Hannon, and by all of the Kohut family and her many friends.  She was especially close to Ala Banka, who provided support every Monday for many years.

Prayers will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, Winnipeg, at 7:30 pm, Friday, November 23, 2018, with Recitation of the Rosary beginning at 7:00 pm.

Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Cathedral, 353 St. Mary Ave., at 10 am, Saturday, November 24, 2018, with interment to follow at Assumption Cemetery, 3990 Portage Avenue.
