Obituary of IGNACE ZYWOTKIEWICZ

IGNACE ZYWOTKIEWICZ Ignace Antony Zywotkiewicz, husband to beloved wife Mary, succumbed to cancer on September 15, 2012, aged 91. Born November 1, 1920 near Vilnius, Poland, Ignace was a veteran of the Polish 2nd Corps, British 8th Army. He was one of many who were imprisoned in labour camps in the frigid Siberian Gulags. In 1941, he was among 45,000 men, whose freedom was negotiated by the Allies and recruited to serve in the Polish 2nd Corps. Under the leadership of General Wladyshaw Anders, Ignace served in Persia, Afghanistan, North Africa and Kenya before engaging in the massive and bloody battle for Rome at Monte Cassino, Italy. The Polish 2nd Corps capturing of Cassino, expedited the breaching of the Gustav Line, Allied capture of Rome and was a significant turning point on the Italian Front in the Second World War. Upon immigrating to Canada in 1947 and settling in Winnipeg, Ignace met and married Mary Naumczykowna in 1949, a marriage that endured until his last day. Ignace is survived by brother Kazimir, wife Mary, sons Henry (Kris), Bob and Richard (Eva), and grandchildren Jenner and Adam. Ignace was a hard worker, a handyman and loved spending time puttering around his home. His smile, engaging laughter, and relentless selflessness in the face of many hardships will never be forgotten to all those who knew and loved him. Funeral will be held at Holy Ghost Church, 341 Selkirk Ave. on Friday, September 21. Rosary at 9:30 a.m., service at 10:00 a.m. Private reception for family and friends at Canadian Polish Legion 246, 1335 Main St. at 12:00 noon.
