One memory of my time with Barry stands out as clear as day - although it was many, many years ago... I was then and still am now, a very headstrong person. I was determined to find some man who lived in Thompson, Manitoba!.
In the dead of winter, I drove to Winnipeg from Halifax. In fact, I think Darlene drove with me from Halifax to Ottawa and Sophie drove with me from Ottawa to Winnipeg.
When Sophie and I arrived in Winnipeg, Barry insisted that I stay with him for a few days before I ventured up north. He was worried about me driving up there.
Naturally, I was/am the type of person who thought and said ...Why are you worried?... I'll be just fine driving 5 hours on a winter road by myself! Although snowy roads and freezing temperatures are not normal to me (I'm a Vancouver girl!) this is not a problem at all. I will conquer all!
En route - the car started making strange noises and I learned about gas line anti-freeze. Thank God that Barry was there! Barry took the long bus home after he saw me settled. I will never forget his kindness towards me
I've been lucky in my life to meet a few exceptionally kind and genuinely loving and caring people in my life. Barry is one of those people. Sophie was another.
Barry was so caring about his family and friends - a good role model for us all. I admired him. He always seemed like my big brother - always there in the background if I needed him, and as solid as a rock to lean on if the times were difficult. I will miss Barry and my heart goes out to his family.
