LAWRENCE EDWIN JONES SR.

Suddenly on March 22, 2018 Lawrence (Larry) Jones passed away in West St Paul, Mb.

Predeceased by his parents Charles and Agnes (nee Day), brother Brian, son Lawrence (Larry) Jr. and nephew Chris Sawatzky.

Larry is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Deborah (nee Sparks), son Sean (Shasta Welsh), daughter Rhonda, granddaughter Chelsi Gray, brother Bruce, sister Jackie, mother-in law Lenore Woznesensky, sisters- in-law Patricia (Don Fotti), Donna (Udo Burger), Eleanor Friesen (Paul Dufault), brothers-in-law Gerry Giesbrecht (Nonnie), Brett Woznesensky, Tony Woznesensky (Carolynn), many nieces, nephews and extended family.  He will be sadly missed by his fur buddies, dog Yukon and cat Grady.

Larry was born in Wpg. and raised in Rivercrest, West St. Paul.  His father passed away in 1955 and in 1960 his Mother moved the family to Talbot Avenue in Elmwood.  There, Larry attended Kent Rd. School and then David Thompson (Elmwood High School). During his time in Elmwood Larry made many life long friends such as Mark, Cliff, Ross, Ron and Kenny.  In 1983 Larry full filled his dream of moving back to Rivercrest, West St Paul with his wife Debbie and resided there until his passing.

Larry was a Life Member and past President of Elmwood Legion #9 and at the time of his passing was the Sports Chairman.  Over the years, Larry was involved in many activities at the Legion including the Dart League.

After moving back to West St Paul Larry became a valued member of the community serving as President of the Rivercrest Community Club and a member of the Building Committee for the Sunova Centre.  Larry re-established the soccer program in West St Paul, served as Soccer Convenor for many years. He also was very involved with his son Sean with Coaching his Soccer teams and Managing some of his Hockey teams.  In 2012 Larry received the J.C. (Chic) Balderstone Award and later was awarded the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal for his volunteer services in the community.

Larry was an active member of Lions Clubs International starting in 1984 with the East Kildonan Lions Club.  In 1990 he became a Charter Member of the Seven Oaks Lions where he served as President and in 2010 he was instrumental in establishing the West St Paul Lions Club and was Past President at the time of his passing.  Larry received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for his humanitarian services with Lions International.

Larry was also a member of the Winnipeg citizen band radio club

In his spare time he enjoyed the relaxing interests of gardening, fishing and spending time at the family cottage in Whytewold as well as tinkering on his 1981 Oldsmobile Cutlass with his son Sean doing various things on it.

Larry spent many years employed as a welder with Princess Auto, Coop Implements, Astro Industrial and Falcon Machinery.  In 1988 Larry quit the welding trade and started working for Pony Express where his contract was with Cunningham Business Interiors.  After a couple of years he began working directly for Cunningham`s and in time was promoted to Store Manager of CBI, their used furniture division where he was employed until his retirement on Dec. 31, 2016.

Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held on April 21st at 1:00 pm at Elmwood Legion 920 Nairn Ave.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Diabetes Canada, Winnipeg Pet Rescue or Dog Guides Canada.
