Obituary of GERTRUDE KAZIMIRA ZUKOWSKY
GERTRUDE KAZIMIRA ZUKOWSKY
(nee MACSYMCHUK)
On December 14, 2017, in her 100th year, Gertrude went to her final rest.
Predeceased by her husband, Michael, in 1996, her sisters, Eloise Popiel, Wanda Ash, and Jean Eady, and her brothers, Julius Maxim and Alfred (Ted) Maxim, she is survived by her daughter Janet Zukowsky of Chelsea, Quebec, Sister-in-Law Katherine Zukowsky of Calgary, Alberta, and numerous nephews and nieces.
Gertrude was born in Schumacher, Ontario in 1918. Upon the early death of her Mother in 1926, her Father moved her and her five siblings to the Parkdale Orphanage in Parkdale, Manitoba where, she often mused, she spent some of the happiest years of her life. In 1936, she moved to Winnipeg where she married Michael Zukowsky in 1940.
Gertrude was the consummate Mother and Homemaker, delighting and excelling in baking, sewing, knitting, and gardening. She kept the neighbourhood children well supplied with home-made cookies and their parents with fresh produce from her garden in the summer months. She also loved watching hockey and baseball on television, switching her allegiance from one team to another to ensure that she was always rooting for the underdog.
Sincere and special gratitude to her grandnephew, Richard Snowdon, St. Joseph’s Seniors Home, and Hannah and her colleagues at Friendly Caregivers Seniors Care for the devotion, comfort, and kindness they provided Gertrude in her final years.
A celebration of Gertrude’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 22 at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Salvation Army or your chosen charity.
