Obituary of MARIA DE ANDRADE
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Maria de Andrade on July 18, 2017 at 3:25am at the age of 90 at St. Boniface Hospital with her daughter by her side. Preceded by her husband Antonio De Andrade in 2006, she leaves behind her daughter Helia, her son Elder (Lourdes); her five grandchildren Filomena, Andrea (Kevin), Jordan, Xavier, Diego; and her two great-grandchildren Carter and Isla.
Maria was a devoted wife and mother who always put her family's needs before hers. She loved traveling, camping, dancing to waltzes, and doing her evening crochet. Maria, like her husband Antonio, loved talking and conversing with people from all over the world. She came to Canada with her daughter Helia from Faial Island in the Azores, Portugal in starting a new life with her husband Antonio, who already had been established in Canada. They worked hard in Canada and made many close, local and international friends, and often visited relatives in Toronto, Portugal and in the United States.
A woman with an impeccable memory, not only did Maria know the dates of everyone's birthdays, she knew precise events and dates in her history, describing them to us to the very minutest detail. Once a week before her health started to falter, she enjoyed going to the Concordia Club, a senior activity center, where she met and socialized with many new friends. Everyone that met Maria had always commented that she was the kindest lady they had ever met. She had a heart of gold.
She also got to know many home-care workers who simply adored here. We would like to thank the staff of St. Boniface Hospital on ward 5B, who were there for her, especially in the last few difficult days. Maria never complained and always praised all who came to her bedside.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 23 at 6:00 p.m. with Prayers at 7:00 p.m. at St. Anthony of Padua (Hungarian) Church, 365 Burnell St. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 24 at 10:00 a.m. also at the Church. Interment will follow in Assumption Cemetery.
