Obituary of MARY OLIJNYK

MARIA OLIJNYK

It is with grieving hearts we the family of Maria Olijnyk announce her peaceful passing on Thursday, May 18, 2017.

Left to mourn her are her daughter Jaroslawa Sylvia Middleton (Derryl), John Middleton (Sanylle), Jamie Middleton (Leslie) and her great-grandchildren Drake, Blake, Duncan and Haven. Maria was eagerly awaiting the birth of her fifth great-grandchild in July.

She was born March 9, 1922 in Selo Szchepaniw, Ukraine, the first of three daughters to Wolodomyr and Anastasia Starzeckyj. Maria survived the Holodomor only to be taken into a forced labour camp in Germany during World War II. There her first daughter Stefania was born and died in infancy.  Together with her husband Anton (who predeceased her in 1988) she immigrated to Canada in 1946. Through hard work they made a good life for themselves and their daughter Jaroslawa. Maria was a devoted wife, mother and Baba. She gave of herself to not only her family but anyone in need. Her grandsons were a great joy to her as were her great-grandchildren. She will be truly missed!

Her family would like to give their heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Holy Family Home, particularly to "her family" on St. Francis. Your loving care for our Mother and Baba will never be forgotten!  Our thanks and appreciation also goes to Drs. Terry and Andrea Babick who not only cared for Maria but also supported us through this most difficult time.

Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, May 25 at 10:00 a.m., with viewing at 9:30 a.m., at St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Church, 590 Alverstone Street. Interment to follow in Holy Family Cemetery, 4355 Main Street.
