Obituary of WILLIAM (WASYL) GNUTEL
WILLIAM (WASYL) GNUTEL
William (Wasyl) Gnutel, 89, passed peacefully on Great and Holy Friday at Holy Family Home with family by his side.
Left to cherish his memory is his Wife of 61 years Dena and his only child Mark and his wife Theresa.
Bill is also survived by his brothers John (Iris), Walter, Alex (Alycia), Don (Betty), sisters Alice (Nick) Zazula and Audrey (Paul) Kulbaba and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bill was predeceased by father and mother Joseph and Michalena Gnutel, father-in-law Alec Myluk, mother-in-law Kalia Myluk, infant brother Peter, sisters and brother-in-law Mary (Frank) Nykoluk, Jean (Paul) Jarema, Josephine (John) Gulchak, sister-in-law Eileen Gnutel, nephew Donald Gnutel.
Bill was born near Oakburn MB, he was the oldest son of 10 siblings. At age 21 he moved to Transcona to find work.
Bill worked with Manitoba Hydro, Winnipeg Electric and the Creosote plant, and in 1963 was hired by the CNR where he worked for 25 years.
He met his wife, Dena, at a reception and they were married in 1956 at St. Michael Ukrainian Catholic Church and in 1963 their only son Mark was born and they became lifelong residents of Transcona.
An avid gardener, tinkerer of things and putterer in the kitchen, Bill was happiest being busy. He and Dena enjoyed their life together; evenings included a shared apple, watching the news, wheel of fortune, dancing with the stars and a good western movie. They built a cottage at Hillside Beach in 1984 and enjoyed many summers there with their inherited furry canine friend Dickens. Family was always important and in 1994 he welcomed Theresa into the family as his daughter-in-law. Cherished memories also include Fr. Mark’s ordination to the priesthood and many social events, trips and catching up with all the siblings of the growth of each other’s families.
Our family’s strong faith allowed the Lord to guide Bill throughout his life long journey and helped ease his burdens, especially during the last few years with his many health issues. The family offers an abundance of thanks and gratitude to the many family, friends and clergy who have offered their support and prayers. We would also like to especially thank Sisters Darleane and Ruth and all SSMI, Drs. Terry and Andrea Babick and the wonderful staff and administers at Holy Family Home for their loving ministry of care and comfort for Bill in these last few months.
Services will take place at St. Michael Ukrainian Catholic Church, 100 Yale Ave. Prayers of Bright Week will be held on Wednesday, April 19 at 7:00 p.m. with Resurrection Liturgy celebrated on Thursday, April 20 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Green Acres Memorial Gardens 4 Apostle
